how do you mean "broken" mp3's?

No, whether it's broken sound quality or bad mp3
structure(CRC error or whatnot).

Well, there's a few specific errors that can usually be
fixed, like bad Xing VBR frames, but those aren't common.

I hope someone can prove me wrong though, as I have a couple
of these myself ...

important public service message

MP3 compression the way it is usually done is ass for
electronic music.

I just got loop-finding-jazz-records on CD after having the
192k MP3s for a while and the difference is astonishing -
it's like hearing the music for the first time.

I guess if more people used -r3mix it would not
offend the ear so.

glad you noticed mp3's sound like shit. sorry to say that a
lot of people don't notice the difference...

A lot of people listen to them on crappy headphones with
computer fans blowing in the background. No wonder ...

fleetmouse, the --r3mix LAME encoder preset is essentially
obsolete, people should probably start using

--alt-preset standard

as a replacement or

--alt-preset cbr 192 (or higher)

if you have to have CBR for whatever reason.

Consider using LAME, Bladeenc has quite a few bugs,
especially at 128 KBps.

The author has stopped working on it as well, not a great
sign of support.

Alot of people dont have a decent set of speakers to notice
any difference in MP3 bitrates..

Yep, LAME is my choice of MP3 encoding!

yea, the ripper i use has lame too, i've used it but i
generally use blade. i don't really make mp3's @ 128, i make
'em at 192 unless the source files are in mono or low stereo
quality.

I rip all my new music into mp3pro format and at 100% vbr.
The average bitrate is 128kps and far exceeds that of a
normal mp3 of that bitrate...

When I heard BOC's 'Amo Bishop Roden' on CD for the first
time, it was like a new track. The heavy bass had completely
dissapeared in my mp3.

Inverted Whale, tell me more about alt-preset standard, the
man page isn't especially descriptive! Are extreme and
insane better than standard in terms of sound quality?

Maybe the mp3 is cooked. Try Uncook95 on the file and
see if it fixes it...

Just wanted to stress that loop-finding-jazz-records is
un-fucking-believably good. What a great disk. Like, half of
the music must have been seen as noise by the mp3 encoder
and thrown out.

It plays kinda like a cross between Pole and Oval, but far
more musically satisfying than either. It has Pole's dubby
echoes and Oval's bittersweet snatches of stolen melody,
arranged less haphazardly. More craft. Lots of clever detail
at the threshold of audibility, sounds like fabric swishing
(which is probably samples of needles playing in "empty"
grooves), eensy weensy little pops and clusters of static
buffed and placed with as much loving detail as a
Squarepusher turnaround.

You've already figured this out, but extreme and insane are
both better quality than standard.

I can only hear the difference between standard and extreme
on about a half dozen tracks (like autechre - second bad
vilbel) so I always use standard since it's a good bit
smaller. insane is probably the best quality you'll get out
of a standard mp3, but the filesize is huge.

If you're curious about this sort of stuff, the LAME
developers hang out on audio-illumination.org/forums/

i find a huge difference between mp3 and vinyl.
the commpression in mp3s ruin everything in my opinion.
try downloading some autechre you have on vinyl allready. i
just sounds like shit (the mp3) and all the higher
frequencies sound distorted and squechy and the sort

Then that's what I'll use as a test, that and maybe some
Chiastic. Does standard use the ~19kHz cutoff like Lame?

Yes, the --alt-preset standard lowpass is 19kHz. extreme is
19500 Hz and insane is 20500 Hz.
