jmax, pd - free, jmax is opensource, do basically the same
thing as max/msp only non-mac.
supercollider - free, mac, slightly harder to learn but FAR
more flexible.

but each to his/her own i suppose.

sure you do, its called pirated software

Max/MSP is by far the best program I have used in a while, I
like it because it is far more visual then Super Collider, I
like to look at things once in a while, not just staring
into the code all the time....

Its a very powerfull and very fun program when you get it
wired and understand it

Plus there are TONS of free patches to get you started,
online people post them a lot, do a search for Max/MSP and
you should find some

it. I have max/msp free too, but it ain't called pirated

yes, you can donwload a free version of MAX/MSP at
cycling74 which will fully function for a month.
