I've just recently really got into collecting vinyl and other than running a cleaning brush over the record while it plays (dont know how standard that is for all record players.. but mine has this attachment..) how does everyone go about cleaning theirs?
I've read up a little on some pages, but would like to know how some of you clean them? fluids, techniques.. etc?

I don't know a great deal about it, but you could get one of these...

One of my dad's mates is a vinyl fiend and has a really huge record cleaning/repairing machine the size of a photocopier...

That machine sounds expensive. I really need to get a proper clening kit for my vinyl. I will give the hanky a whirl. What type of Hanky are we talking here? Silk? Cotton?

Noooooo..... no hanky. fucking hell. If you rub the dirt into the vinyl you will make it worse. I have this hand held tool you run around the vinyl that removes all the dirt. I used it on my older vinyl and it improved the playback loads. I'm not sure what material it is tho.
It's a black block around 1 by 5 inches that has a brush inside the base to get the dust from the meterial. You can also get these very fine brushes to use but I have no idea where you could get these now.
But most of all make sure you don't just use the closest thing or you can make grains of dirt stick in the groves and cause the needle to jump. Ask at HMV about it.

In time I will buy my own decks, then I will not need to concern myself with such trivia matters...
I don't like how easily affected by scratches vinyl is- at least cds can get some pretty hellacious scratches before they skip etc.

Me olds have a brush type thing ..
its all about the static, so you don't as spikee rightly pointed out want to rub the dust in .. in this case you press this button on the 'brush' (mind you this is a 70's relic) / whilst brushing across as the vinyl is playing- that manages to charge it or something .. ok this has got out of hand ..
just use dishwashing liquid for a "squeaky" clean finish

I know, I've been wanting some since I played about on my mates the other week. He had to go out and I did this wicked mix just before he got back. I tried it again to show him and I just couldn't get it to work...
I've decided that since I buy CDs just to MP3 them then keep the CD at my parents house I may as well buy all my stuff on vinyl and just DL the MP3s. I was tempted just to get a hi-fi witha record deck, but I think I'll save up for decks...

Best is playing something like kid koala and pretending you're doing the scratching on the other deck :)
Sometime you get cool effects where the beats are in sync, but out of phase, like a flam drumming effect.

The only playful thing I do when DJing is hide below the decks so you can only see my paw then the top of my head when I need to change records. I don't play much tho ^^

A good laugh is dropping AFX in the middle of some other stuff that everyone knows. They just freak out and look at you weirdly then get back to whatever they're doind. I normally follow 160BPM with some Beach Boys. It works but it's tricky.

You have the 808 one too? Excellent. That is too much fun to drop. I just kept dropping that strings bit and my mate came up to me and asked why I kept playing a bit of Atomic Kitten. I then stopped playing just that bit and played the whole thing. He apologised. I recommend you get Jump Around and mix it with Sergeant Pepper. Sounds too good. Has to be the reprise version of it though. I can e-mail you an MP3 of the mix working if you want mate? As for Hendrix. You git. My Gran threw out loads of my mums vinyl when she got married and moved out. so the collection she has now is just a small amont. Here Hendix was gone. I need foxy lady to mix with.
