Who's more professional?

Out of Aphex Twin and Squarepusher, who do you think is
more professional with their music in terms of continuity,
production, etc?

I think Squarepusher is. His songs kind of link in to each
other...something Richard's tracks don't.

Your opinion?

actually i can't stand most square pusher... i think i've
got some sorta disease- not that i'm a music snob or
anything... but his ego's a LOT bigger than his talent, imo

(and i'm not gonna say that i think either of them rich
twats are proffessional in any way, shape, or form)

I'd say Squarepusher...he's done less skipping about from
style to style. And I also think Squarepusher's music has
evolved without drasitcally changing. Take for example I
Wish You Could Talk and Central Line. Both use the Amen
break(I hope I'm not mistaken..), but sound ALOT different.

*drastically

..but what's Squarepusher without the Amen break?

Jesus -- you list those as being GOOD points? his music is
samey and he's less experimental is what you're basically
saying.

So does changing one's musical style imply
"unprofessionalism"?

I hardly think so.

I think it's a bit of a silly question...
btw..if we are talking about
professionalism..then..hmm..whose music has made it on to
more jingles soundtracks etc...all commercial (I read
professional entities)

RDJ

I guess what I'm saying is, I don't see a defined style in
RDJ's work, but I do in Squarepushers. Of course I know that
having a certain style alone doesn't determine
professionalism, but to ME, I just find it more professional
for a musician to have a style than to muck around in
different ones and see which suits them best. It's more like
Squarepusher stays in his own line of things, but,
IMHO, RDJ does not.

ive only recently fully realized squarepusher's true genius
(as far as i can tell)

him and Afx are both music geniuses, of course, but of
different types.

Squarepusher is a purcusionist. its what he specializes
in..
..pretty basic song writing (not to say its not good, cus
its great at times), but the most interesting
aspects/features of his music are almost always rhythmical

take Papalon (from Hard Normal Daddy) for examlpe.. listen
to it just concentrating on the rhythm section alone... its
a masterpeice of subtle percussion..... at every singel
second of that song something interesting is going on in the
purcussion... (including a clapping solo taht is the best
use of clapping samples ive ever heard ever) the fact that
it manages to be so subtle, even gentle at times, is amazing
considering its own brilliance... it never steals the show
the actual jazz song is almost just an excuse to display his
amazing talent, but like i said about his song writing
before: it's still a great song

his genius is hte the subtle details... and of course his
super-fast, spastic rhythmic passages (Anirog D9, from HND)
that have made him infamous are so percise and complex...
ahhhhhh its amazing!!!
.....and the way the drums actually carry the melody at
times.. ive never heard another artist who can do this so
effectively.

..and that cheasiness and childish playfullness? well, hes
playfull, yeah
but the cheesiness is only superficial.. some of his
cheasiest songs are also his most mind-blowing imo... its
like the cheesiness is just a disguise or something lol

anyways, all im saying is theres no toher artist who can
push what are traditionally accompanying rhythmic parts to
the point of becoming melody all on thir own so effectively,
and of course few can come close to his
perciseness/complexity while at the same time subtleness...

ahhhhh hes such a genius!

uh... wow, i didn't realize how much i wrote lol

and oh yeah: i dont know whos more professional

i think i'd say squarepusher... go plastic has EXTREMELY
slick sounding production, while even aphex's newest stuff
sounds sort of low-tech compared to it....

im NOT saying that makes 'pusher better though

In terms of professionality neithor of them really act
professional. Squarepusher seems to put out the same type
of things as he always has, which I suppose is good for some
people, but I personally think RDJ's experimentation shows
for something. He's tried a lot of different styles an they
all came out pretty good. And it all still was identifiably
RDJ. I'd like to see SPusher do that...

offline Mr_Flappypants from Louisville (United States) on 2002-10-02 20:45 [#00390630]

Oh yes, just to clear things up, I never said I prefer
Squarepusher over RDJ. Maybe I do, maybe I don't. It's just
that when I look at it RDJ's stuff is more scattered than
Squarepushers, and, again, IMHO, I find being less
scattered is a bit more professional.

they are both very pro. I love afx because he conquers one
thing and then moves on to the next, thats what real pro
artists do he makes amazing ambient, then kick f ing ass
drill and bass, then composes "new classical" like his piano
tracks, makes fun of main stream hip hop videos with window
licker, hes all over the place, conquering styles left to
right front to back up and down, he has real tight
melodies, hes a really good composer. Then theres square
mother fing pusher hes got jazz songs. His drums ace all
fools, not to mention his basslines. he doesnt stay on
the same tip from album to album he progresses, moves his
shit forward, reckin shop along the way.

I don't see where Squarepusher suddenly got this 'ego'
thing

Is it when he speaks on his tracks? Telling everyone he
wants t orip there face off. Then really...couldn't Richard
be accused of the same thing with his 'Come on you Cunt...'
and his mum and dad sending him a voice message

Please enlighten me

I think theres actually a lot of fluctuation is style and
experimentation in SP work that Tom is just not geting any
credit for..I mean Music is Rotted One Note and Budakhan
Mindphone exist in a dimension totallytangential to any of
his work before it..as does Go Plastic..and then his track
Untitled..now do you know Squarepusher...once again is
nothing like anything that precedes it....I know many would
say..it's like My Red Hot Car..but no listen to it..it's
nothing like it..hence my initial reaction....

this is a silly thread...

indeed...
i think the questiong that everyone seems to want to debate
here is continuity, and i think that afx would be at the low
end of that, and sp would be at the highend- and i think
IMHOIMHOIMHOIMHOIMHOIMHOIMHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
they're both, dangerously uncool extremes

these guys make tunes in their spare time and arse about for
most of their life. they fill in time by DJing and playing
live (occaisionally). Well, RDJ does anyway...
what i'm saying is... They arent proffessionals and i dont
think they want to be...

are you saying they aren't serious about music??

just cus they fool around and aren't as pretentious as say
autechre doesn't mean they aren't professionals...

...to think that music is just some way to spend spare time
for them is ridiculus!

music must be incredibly important to anyone makes music
like this!
just cus they have senses of humor and aren't snobby about
being musicians doesn't mean they aren't seroius...

and you can tell for sure from interviews that squarepusher
is very serious about it..
....with RDJ its kinda harder to tell cus he fucks around a
lot with interviews n shit but oh well hes just a playful,
even childish at times, genius
...still a genius

its not like he (either one) just pulls this music out of
his ass
