Waht exactly is the problem I'm not using the worlds
fastest computer and have never/hardly ever found the site
slow.

bandwidth - we're eating bandwidth here. the messageboard
alone is eating about 60 Gb / month. anyone into this
business can confirm it's much - extremely much.

Yes, unfortunately even the smallest graphics, when
downloaded millions of times, will eat up tons of
bandwidth.

I'm sure this is probably a forgone conclusion, but you have
optimized the graphics as much as possible, right Phob?

It's all those angled corners...nice, but they eat up
bandwidth.

Are you sure it's the MB traffic and graphics that are
eating your bandwidth? I had a problem with joyrex.com
awhile back where some russian aphex site was hotlinking my
audio files and graphics.

joyrex: the graphics are 100% optimized - everything in 16
colors gif - except for the temporarily header graphics.

we've been monitoring the site for a while now and tracked
it down to the mb...

the huge amount of users are the main problem :-D

maybe its time to vote out some members
and have a small elitist community
having bland repetitive conversations
we've already had 1 million times

lets call it "Big Brother 4"

we're discussing on increasing the bandwidth as well as
having a dedicated server.

i'm still trying to figure out how he (they?) is (are) going
to pay for xltronic if phobia's having problems with the
bandwidth here. especially if xltronic is really going to
have all those videos, which would be cool. maybe they found
sponsorship from a company (warp? specific artists? who
knows.. not our business anyway).

dedicated = just like smokehammer said???

wont that be mean and rude to other ppl

i think deleting older posts would help alot too.. but that
isnt really nice

no... a dedicated server for the site means we're not
sharing the server with other homepages/sites. we have our
own cpu/hdd/whatever.

how about letting us host our own pix ? Many other
messageboards are doing this and it works fine - and it will
save you at least 60-70% percent of the traffic.
Dedicated servers are friggin expensive.

offline Asche XL on 2002-09-09 19:42 [#00385611]
Points: 4241 Status: Lurker

Then you have to pay for people constantly loading your pic
which will be costly for you.

offline jand from Braintree (United Kingdom) on 2002-09-09 20:49 [#00385645]

the thing with graphics is that the pics all get cached in
your browser so they don't eat very little bandwidth at
all...

Even the avatars are no problem, as once you've dled em
once, they stay on your computer & don't get downloaded
again....

It's all the text that's a problem...whenever a thread
chnaged, the entire text of the page needs to be
resent...you can imagine how it adds up with all the
well-deserved activity here....

Shit...I'm getting technical but just wanted to clarify how
well designed this mb is...

The main page is a little fat ... my browser tells me it's
45KB of HTML, compared to 5KB to another board that
I visit.

But that's a stock board and probably heavily tuned. I
suppose it is a price we pay for the custom .nu board.

offline Joyrex from watmm.com (United States) on 2002-09-09 22:17 [#00385701]

I'd try optimizing the graphics even further - I bet those
corner graphics could go down to 2 colour if you alised them
rather then anti-aliased them, as they are 45 degree angles
anyways.

Dedicated servers are great if you can afford
them...cheapest I've seen is 99USD per month that offers
200GB of bandwidth, 20GB space, etc.

But who has 99USD per month to spend on a fansite?

it just me?
Must be something wrong Dr what's happening? It's alright

joyrex: it's adaptive gif's - so it only uses the actual
colors from the graphics. if you see two colors - then only
two colors are saved in the file.
