Well after all the grim war tales circling around here (most of them started by me I admit) here’s a humorous anecdote. This is story of New Zealand’s ultimate contribution to the Second World War: a plan for a weapon to rival the atomic bomb. Unfortunately for the allies and fortunately for the waters around New Zealand and the pacific, the person responsible for this alleged super weapon was an inept quack, kooky as a cuckoo.
This weapon was called, wait for it the “The Tsunami Bomb”, yes, in a plot to rival the ill-fated mad genius of that ii-fated big budget flop “The Avengers”, the plot involved an attempt to create a Tsunami hurricane that will drown and wash away the Japanese troops deeply entrenched in the atoll beaches all across the Pacific. This was supposed to be achieved with dropping huge bombs into the water and hoping that the resulting splash back would be so powerful that it will be like a directed and controllable hurricane.
Not only was this logic flawed but also there was no sound scientific research or studies to prove it. The Americans were desperate enough to be willing to support and fund the whole venture. The actual experiments that were carried out, were a hysterical farce, bombs dropped in an artificial pond, which they had to wait for ages to fill via the surprisingly natural means of rain for these geniuses purporting to alter and control weather, will still only produce, these weak splashes, nowhere near even a wave let alone a hurricane of Tsunami strength. Even when faced with reality the person responsible for the idea a Lt. Col. Leach persisted, falsifying data and stringing the Americans along. Until his supervisors returned from their overseas trips and discovered the whole fiasco. The Americans eventually pulled out and Lt.Col.Leach was asked to resign.
The whole thing was covered up as a top-secret project, more likely just to avoid the embarrassment but strangely enough for all the secrecy, on the eve of getting the boot Leach got nominated for CBE, f

for his services in the war and work on a “Top Secret Weapon” to rival the atomic bomb. The media went into a frenzy trying to figure out, speculations soared and the notoriety of this weapon led journalists to believe that this weapon actually was far worse than an atomic bomb. The authorities persisted on the cover-up, only adding more fuel to this “Super Weapon” theory, if only to avoid the humiliating embarrassment both here and in America, until recently when the files became declassified under the freedom of information act.
It’s just as well, or else those laundry bills for the splashed Japanese soldiers uniforms would have surely brought the might of the Japanese Imperial army and the whole nation to its knees. Or maybe they would have all surrendered in disbelief at the sheer blundering stupidity of bombs being dropped into the water, meters away from their entrenchments on the
