my new thoughts on the term idm

after sitting for long periods listening to aphex and
squarepusher and autechre and the like I've decided this.
IT IS INTELLIGENT. everyone complains about the name idm
cause it comes accross as pompous and prideful saying it's
more intelligent than other dance music but damnit it is
more intelligent than other dance music if you haven't
notice how much work goes into even 5 seconds of a
squarepusher beat as apposed to a prodigy beat that hits
hard( and yes it does hit hard and it's good but try and
bare with me) it's just plain more complicated and smarter
music.

I'll get crap for this. but I don't care. I'm right :)

it should be IM

I do however agree with that, it isn't dance music per say.
some of it is dance-able but it's focus is just on music in
general and usually the pushing of the envelope there in.

IDM is a stupid term. The end.

$.02

yes some tracks by plaid are danceable
but most of the rest artists may have one or two
most "IDM" is mood(including hate and anger) or chill or
lounge music, the D should be dropped fro IDM

Call it "braindance", that's what Joyrex does...

it is not a stupid term if you understand that the music is
generally alot more complicated than other music.
especially electronic music which has become an endless
competition of who has the better gear and can pump the
fattest beats and there is very little brain left in that.

aside from the other artists I mentioned, squarepusher is
one of the most intelligent electronic artists I know.

and as far as the term being pompous and prideful. well...
sometimes it's fun to be pompous and prideful. screw it.

I do agree that it is intelligent and well thought out
music, but there are acoustic/electric bands/artists that
have these same qualities. You wouldn't call a band like
Meshuggah or Sleepytime Gorilla Museum IDM, but they have
intelligently composed songs.

exactly what you are saying and I agree wholeheartedly.

i dont think its intellegent.

terms like "hedphuq" and "snarerush" prove my point. Anyone
that refers to a section as the "hedphuq" section, is not a
very intellegent person imo.

sure, IDM has alot of time put into it... lots of feeling,
but that doesnt mean its intellegent

alot of time is spent in makeing britney spears songs. They
have to be catchy, appeal to a wide audience of children,
have good sound... but in no way would i call it
intellegent.

offline john is fast from sacramento (United States) on 2002-09-09 09:25 [#00384935]
Points: 638 Status: Regular

calling a section of a song the hedphuq section doesn't have
anything to do with how intelligent you are. sometimes you
just want to use silly words even though you are a bright
persion.

and you still could never convince me that the programming
on any squarepusher album is not completely brilliant and
intelligent. And the sampling abilities he has with live
gear. that takes talent and intelligence.
More so than your average pop song, Idm focuses on every
little detail of every sound and every measure becomes a
part of the painting. there are squarepusher songs that
every single measure of the song is different. completely
non-loopy. that takes smarts.

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2002-09-09 09:28 [#00384939]
Points: 14042 Status: Lurker

no it takes talent and hardwork

those 2 things do not define intellegence

to make britany spears music is easier cause theres already
a set formula! its such a step by step set up they might as
well come out with a new toy called "make a song"..you know
like those home science kits. might as well...im sure
anyone could make a great pop song..it aint that hard. id
like to see most pop artists like Avril Lasagna (sic) sit
down with some gear and come out with a glitch peice or
drill and bass. she couldn't do it... no, lets get our
dumb skateboarder friends together in my video while i
lipsinc....oh so much hard work...gleesh!

that nsync sng, pop is intelligen coz it has drill n bass
beatboxing.

hehe, i don't mind the name, it's just a name. Having no
mane for the genre is sorta pretentious.
but i like braindance better.

works for me coz most of my stuff is dancible.

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2002-09-09 09:36 [#00384949]
Points: 14042 Status: Lurker

ok, i cant beleive im defending pop music

but come on man, give it more credit then that

if pop was SOOOO easy, everyone would be millionare pop
stars

yeah there is a set formula, but using the formula to come
up with a #1 single... now thats hard

please, id love to see any of you write a pop song and have
it come anywhere near the charts

just like they wouldnt know what to do with electronica
gear, electronic musicians most definatly wouldnt be able to
produce a #1 single

offline john is fast from sacramento (United States) on 2002-09-09 09:37 [#00384951]
Points: 638 Status: Regular

it does take hard work and talent. AND INTELLIGENCE.
something that is complicated takes intelligence to create
it's just fact. and my point is that idm is generally
extremely complicated with many layers.

complicated art requires more intelligence than simple art.

not that the people that make simple art aren't smart they
just didn't use as much intelligence. it's still good
art(if it's good)

simple art, complex art, intellegence...

its all relative

offline john is fast from sacramento (United States) on 2002-09-09 09:39 [#00384954]
Points: 638 Status: Regular

pop music has alot more factors to why the song gets on the
charts. the right look the right timing the right company
pushing you. great smile and the attitude people want at
the moment. none of that has anything to do with the music.
not that I think anyone can write a great song but most
people can pretty much crap out a pop song that is
comparable to those that are popular.

offline john is fast from sacramento (United States) on 2002-09-09 09:40 [#00384957]
Points: 638 Status: Regular

sure it's relative. But we are comparing art here so the
relativity is a valid point.

Zeus: k see this is what the average person needs which
obviously has no ties into 'intelligence' or 'skill'

1) gotta look sexy for MTV

2) gotta dance good

3) gotta be cool

If you have all these things PLUS you're a girl or good
looking guy with stubble...PLUS a great song done up by
someone else you're going ot get to number one. other than
that skill won't get you to number one. no sirree
bob...that won't happen. well..it did with ok computer
..but thats a diff story. im talking in america.

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2002-09-09 09:42 [#00384960]
Points: 14042 Status: Lurker

yes, while these are all factors...

i still dont think you, or anyone here could make a great
pop tune

not even a good one, or decent one

based purely on music, no other factors

offline Amonbrune from Vancouver (Canada) on 2002-09-09 09:42 [#00384961]
Points: 7327 Status: Addict

I totally agree with john. most of why a song gets to number
1 has no ties into the actual music. sure it sounds good but
uhh..duhh..does the singer look pretty..uh duh dudh
skjfaskd.

i get sick at that kind of attitude.

offline Amonbrune from Vancouver (Canada) on 2002-09-09 09:44 [#00384964]
Points: 7327 Status: Addict

no, and i agree with you zeus. records like ok computer for
instance stand out cause of their genius...it just doesn't
happen any more! people don't care!! they're not looking
for skill...just pretty people and quick catchy
tune...blah...

lets just leave catchy tunes to tv ads eh?

I know for a fact I can write a good pop song. I play
guitar bass keyboard piano drums and sequence on a computer
and do sampling. I have been for over a decade now and I
know how to write a pop song.

off subject, about that hour long epic comment. When I
complete an album that I wish to produce and get into the
hands of the world I plan on recording the whole thing live
as one track and burning that one track onto cd.

and just because you can play multiple instruments, it doest
mean you can write a song

any kind

I don't have recordings of them because I do not write pop
songs. I know I can because I know my abilities but I do
not write them because I think they are boring and annoying.

i'd like to point that most idm beyond the "stars" of idm
is formulatic. you have autechre, aphex, squarrepusher,
boc, plaid, venetian snares, mabey jega or brothomstates.
everyone else is riding on the coatails of these other
artists...just like every other genre. right now there is
1000 bands trying to sound like the strokes

haha, you're a fool. I've been doing music long enough you
don't think I can know what I can and cannot do? I can jump
a foot in the air but you know what I can't remember the
last time I did that. But I still know I can do it.

less than 15 min. here we go....STAND CLEAR OF MY
VERNACULAR WIZDUM!

The Luv of Sk8ters

Oh please baby boy come over
To my house get on over
You are the only one for me
In all this rain around me

I love you skater boy
i love you skater boy
i love you skater boy
i love you skater boy

why did you have to do that
oh baby
oh baby
you know i got hurt
you know i got hurt
i cried and you weren't there

i love you skater boy
i love you skater boy
i love you skater boy
i love you skater boy

That there ladies and gentlemen is the template from which
most pop comes up from. i shall now burn this template in
hopes that we'll never see or hear pop again

*burns template*

I didn't say I never have I said I don't write them. you
asked if I had some to show you and I don't cause I don't
but I have writen them in the past. I mean I wrote a song
for a girl when I was 16 that was of the pop persuasion and
it was pretty much the crap you hear on the radio. I'm not
egotistical, for the most part I think I'm shit but I know
when I can and can't do something.

come guys all music is hard..... writing catchy melodies
is hard than a bunch of noise. trust i've been making cool
sounding noise for years. but writing songs you're mom and
little kids will like is really hard.....otherwise everyone
would be famous......theres more working idm artists than
there are famous pop stars

wanting a whole wack of cool gear.

here is a quote from squarepusher I found on the idea of
having lots of music gear.
"I simply ask that people don't assume that there's a direct
relationship between quantity and quality. Or perhaps there
is, but it's the inverse of what you would assume it to be.
That is, the less you have the more sincere it is."
Although having gear is fun, I love what I have but I've
gotten over a little of my gear lusting days.

Zeus, you have no grounds to even pretend to know that I
could not write a good pop song. I never said I could write
a number one hit but I know I could write a song comparable
in quality to a number one hit. You know nothing of me or
my music. Assuming that I can't simply because you think it
is hard is idiotic because honostly people do write pop
songs all the time. If people do then it is quite possible
I can too, so get over it and accept the fact that maybe I
could do what I say. damn.
