I'm listening to Blue Monday, and I am liking it. A lot.

That 80's sound, but I don't find it that cheesy at all...
badass. This is the '88 remix, I gotta get the original.

What should I get from New Order, what's yer fave
tracks/albums?

Joy Division / New Order to me is like the Beatles to you. I
love everything. I usually recommend people get Substance by
New Order to start out with, it's 2 CDs chock full of 80's
goodness. A lot of classics on there like Temptation, Blue
Monday, True Faith, also a couple of Joy Division songs
redone 'Ceremony' and 'In a Lonely Place', track 1's on
their respective discs. After that i'd recommend their first
album Movement, it's a good transition album from Joy
Division to New Order because Sumner's vocals on it sound a
lot like Ian's. After that if you're still interested you'll
probably just get everything you can find.

I've seen a few videos by them on Much More Music, so I'm
sure I'll like this band... that was some great stuff. I'll
check out your recos, merci beaucoup.

Joy Division and early to mid-80s New Order are dated but
great (Joy Division's lead singer was serious about his
anger and depression and hung himself in 1980, New Order is
the rest of the band, which added the drummers girlfriend to
helpout)

its sort of post-punk, post-kraftwerk hybrid predating house
and Warp IDM. the problem is that all they left the singles
off of all the earlier albums, you had to buy them seperate.
Joy Division's Closer (1980) is a great great record, but
does not have the famous singles "Atmosphere" or "Love Will
tear Us Apart" (which Squarepusher has just reverently
covered on his new record). Joy Divsion has some of the
darkest, most oppressive songs ever...
New Order's best is Power, Corruption, and Lies (1982),
which didnt have "Blue Monday" on it, it was 12" single
only. a couple of other sequencer/early analog electro
crazy classics not on album were the "Everything's Gone
green" singles and "Tempation". "Bizarre Love Triangle" is
so funny and cool, so dated, with its naive early attempt at
whiteboy breakbeat that is just silly, and its typically
nonsense lyrics, it just works like crazy.

talking of videos, they have a cool "live" video in the
studio, just filmed making the song live because New Order
refused to get involved in all the MTV video silliness,
which was sort of a first (they were very "indie" back then,
they refused to lipsinc "Blue Monday" on TV.

later they made one of the funniest videos ever, that few
people ever got to see, the "touched by the hand of god"
video, which made fun of 80s videos. New Order dressed up
like a big-haired heavy metal band for the video and lipsic
and play instraments that are not even in the song, very
silly, but then also in the video (by a woman director) they
had a side story where this woman was being chased/attacked
by a stalker/exboyfriend/rapist or something, and she is
terrified but the man breaks into her car, then she gets
turned on and presumably has sex with him... meant to satire
the misongynistic way women were being portrayed in
videos... funny, controversal, and disturbing... which is
way it was never played on MTV in the states.

Ubik> Sumner then formed Electronic with Johnny Marr from
the Smiths , ..... a great musical family tree

"World in motion" because it reminds me of the summer of
1990 :)

BTW you need to sort out that twitch sine ;D

Downloading some New Order/Joy Division right now, and
listening to ''Love Will Tear Us Apart''... this is a lot
better than Tom J's LWTUA. :-)

Sounds dated, but sounds cool... can't wait to hear the rest
of this stuff.

'Substance' released in 1988 is all the proper versions of
their singles from 81-88, its great! they lost their appeal
for me afterwards, although co-incidently i just d/l 'fine
time' which is from 1989.

definately get substance: it has blue monday orig., bizarre
love trangle, the perfect kiss (my fav) and subculture
(proper non-album version).

oh and it also has confusion which you'll probably recognise
from some film or other :)

''Twenty Four Hours'' from Closer is one of the best songs
I've ever heard. Ian Curtis has an amazing voice.

My fave is probably 'Touched by the Hand of God'. That track
brings back memories from the fifth grade, when I was in
love with this half-Polish girl named Tina.

She was the cutest.

Check out Confusion (bump panel mix, as in Blade), also
Hardfloor's and Richie Hawtin's remixes of Blue Monday.

Oh ja, gotta love the True Faith.

And, to a lesser extent, the Blue Monday.

Not so keen on any of the stuff I heard from the album they
released last year, but this thread has convinced me to get
Substance.
