I've been recommended to try Coil. Anyone like them? Are they worth downloading? I only have 5GB a month to download, so make me a wise decision.

Those are live things downloadable from the web. Otherwise look for albums called "Horse Rotorvator" and "Love's Secret Domain"

Musick to Play in the Dark Volumes I and II are overwhelmingly brilliant. I'm not sure what else to say... Two of my favorite records of all time, right up there with Music Has the Right to Children. If you're looking to try a few hors d'oeuvres off of the Coil platter I'd recommend the following(in no particular order):
Higher Beings Command (Constant Shallowness Leads to Evil) Paranoid Inlay (Musick to Play in the Dark Vol.II) The Dreamer is Still Asleep (Music to Play in the Dark Vol.I)
The Sea Priestess (Astral Disaster) Amethyst Decievers (Autumn Equinox) Refusal to Leave the Land (Black Light District) Inkling (Stolen and Contaminated Songs) Teenage Lightening (Love's Secret Domain) Slur (Horse Rotorvator)
Have you read this interview? http://www.forteantimes.com/articles/142_coil.shtml

If you're buying an album, I would recommend starting with one of their newer works(Time Machines, Musick to Play in the Dark, Constant Shallowness Leads to Evil) as opposed to their older material(Scatology, Horse Rotorvator, How to Destroy Angels, etc.).

my favorite coil is all over their discography as well, but musick to play in the dark vol. 1 and 2 are prolly their most solid albums.
also, to any americans who want to buy the albums, go to strangefortune.com. very, very cheap compared to all other options.

I second Tits' recommendation. Michael Salo(Strange Fortune)has dirt-cheap prices and very quick service. He's the only person I'll buy from.

i have:
• Time Machines — excellent, reminds me a little bit of SAWII (especially the second track)... very different from the other ones i heard :)
• Musick To Play In The Dark, vol.1 — maybe my favorite... quite accessible, and all the tracks are very good or great...
• Musick To Play In The Dark, vol.2 — really deceiving! 'tiny golden books' and 'ether' are great (reminding me respectively of 'red birds will fly out of east and destroy paris in one night' and 'red queen' from v1), and so is the ending of 'batwings (a limnal hymn), but apart from that... meh. :(
• Love's Secret Domain — probably the most well-known Coil album; the tracks are very varied too; beauty rising out of chaos (chaostrophy), a psychotic love song (love's secret domain), a song with intriguing "lyrics" which sounds like a scene of a film maybe (things happen)... very very good stuff. it sounds quite unique, too. :)
• Moon's Milk (In Four Phases) — a compilation of the EPs made for solstices and equinoxes... four parts, one for each season (especially autumn is awesome... rosa decidua and amethyst deceivers are so beautiful, the auto-asphyxiating heirophant is very dark and suffocating, makes you feel uncomfortable but a very good song... other highlights imo are christmas is now drawing near (winter), maybe my fav coil song ever, moon's milk or under an unquiet skull (spring), and a warning from the sun (summer — i want to know what they took before making this song!! ;)); sometimes unequal, but all in all well worth the price. :)

by the way, if you have to order them, prepare yourself for having a very long time waiting before they deliver... i had to wait 3 or 4 months...

lucky you!! =/
i got time machines about 2 or 3 months after i ordered... had to wait 4 months for musick to play in the dark v2... luckily, i found love's secret domain, moon's milk in four phases and musick to play in the dark v1 in virgin megastores.

i forgot about The Remote Viewer too... download it if you can (i don't think you could find it any other way, it was sold only during their tour in europe, spring 2002, in cd-r format and 500 copies only! :))
it's three long instrumental pieces, rather ambient... with bagpipes too...

I have an original copy of Remote Viewer sent to me by Ossian Sex-Shop(Simon Norris). The instruments used are actually the breton pipes and hurdy gurdy... Has anyone heard their live version of Backwards?
