dr-202 drum machine...

i decided to get mine out, and dust it off, and mess around
with it, today.

then i came accross something very interesting...

go the the drumnbass preset patterns... # 3.

its a blatent ripoff of Bleep Street by Squarepusher!

check it out!

are dr-202s any good?

it's just PCM with some cheez-o filters and crappy onboard
roland effects, right?

yeah good point, what are dr-202s like. ive got the sp303
sampler and i really like it, but what bout the dr202, its
v.cheap, so i guess its not as good as mpc or something???
is it??

I've read some really awful reviews on it.

so what is the best drumbox then...and how much? what do you
guys use? i might get a MPC2000 when i get the money

offline license from out of nowhere on 2002-07-18 10:33 [#00314198]
Points: 865 Status: Lurker

dave_g : the best drumbox is probably whatever you're typing
on right now. :p

I use a yamaha ry30...cheap as hell, and it's got a little
bit of everything. not to mention plenty of realtime control
(if you're smart...)

a yamaha tx81z, novation bassStation and a yamaha
cs1x...though i've just built a new pc so I can go more pc
based..i'm also really into sampling old stuff, in process
of sifting loads of vinyl I bought recently

Points: 865 Status: Lurker

hey I've got a tx81z in my little setup too :) what a fun
little toy. a bit on the noisy side though. it's so cheap,
I'm thinking I should get another one so that I have 16 note
polyphony and 4 outputs :)

offline license from out of nowhere on 2002-07-18 10:37 [#00314205]

I was buying another because I like it so much (I remember
you saying you had one now)...i'm going to try mix fm with
my sampled music, I need a reverb unit for it though

and its not a little toy :D

also, I LOVE that click that happens at the end of notes,
its so perculiar

license: the thing im typing on now is a crappy school
computer which runs at about 10MHz. the soundcard is quite
frankly useless and it struggles to work with more than 4
windows at a time :)

but anyway i like doing stuff on computers, i use reason,
but i also like to have something with swithces and buttons
which u can press instead of using that damable mouse
sometimes

offline license from out of nowhere on 2002-07-18 10:41 [#00314213]

yeah, and there's this funny thing it does when you play
really low bass notes, it makes this kinda sifty treble
noise.
you're right though, the thing's got character. :)

I'm actually trying to do exactly the same thing; I finally
got a real sampler a couple months ago and I had this
project I wanted to do, using basically just the sampler,
tx81z, and ry30 as my sound sources. it's difficult to do
though because I have all this visual stuff I want to base
it around and it's more restricting than inspirational.

you have any samples of your stuff? I'd love to hear some.

I'll give you some of my new stuff when I got some done,
should be by start of next week

I agree...little boxes aren't as fashionable as they used to
be, but they're certainly fun and more intuitive than a
computer. if you want a beatbox, buy an ry30...I tell
everyone this, and they don't listen. it's a great little
machine if you can ignore a few of the dated early 90's
rap/pop samples. very flexible - and by this I mean you
could actually make whole songs with it.

don't knock old sound cards. my first "band" (in 7th grade)
was a drummer and me mixing and running a qbasic program on
a 286 which controlled the FM synth from a soundblaster.
GREAT sounds, no joke. :) at any rate, work with what you
got and get machines with CHARACTER!

it was something i read in an interview about the first
drumachine he got, maybe it was the dr-606, i thought it was
the dr-202... not that it matter at all.
luv beep street!

my friend got a tr-626, it's shitty azs hell but with little
work you have many good old roland sound like 808/606 it's
really the way you use it, now we couple it with a
bass-synth pedal fom boss and it's like a tb-303, acid
sounds really harsh and sweepy!

I have a tr-626 myself. kind of an odd machine, PCM but 10
outputs. the hi hats are nice, not real trebly but not
unlike a 909. pretty much no real-time control at all,
though it had great MIDI options. it's a bit ugly and way
bigger than it needs to be, but yeah, with the right effects
(and a decent sequencer, the onboard one leaves more than a
bit to be desired) it can actually be a somewhat usable
machine for [part of] a rhythm section.

Have you guys with Drum machines tried using em with
AudioMulch?...endless fun...Audiomulch is this real-time
audio processing freeware that lets you do some amazing
stuff....feed a DM into it & you can get some oustanding
stuff to sample and then use whenever...

Recommended...even crappy casio keyboard rhythms can be
transformed into IDM classics...

quoth:

no i dont have any pics of my studio.

However... all the music I have written within the last 6
months has been on the software program called Reason.

I have:
MC-303 synth
Dr-202 drum machine
SP-202 sampler
Dr-770 drum machine
Gemini 646 mixer

however im selling all of them... because ive grown out of
them.

With the money i get from them, and saved up money i have, i
intend on getting:

A G4 MAC with as much RAM as I can get
eLogic Sequencing Software
exs24 Software Sampler
CSound
Motu Audio Interface
Reason 2

I really beleive that its all going software.
Of course hardware has its benifits... but at the core of my
studio... its all gonna be software.

Perhaps down the line, when I get a real job etc, Ill buy
analouge stuff. But for now, this will be more then enough.

audiomulch is a blast. it's the only software I used
regularly (besides cooledit for sample editing), back when I
was into software anyway. I used to do all my mixdowns in
audiomulch.

hey I used to want one of those SP-202s. then I found an
Akai S2000 for just as cheap. and I bought a minidisc
recorder for field sampling.

Zeus : I dunno if I mentioned it before, but cSound is FREE.
maybe you're talking about a front-end...?

yeah, apparently there is several types though. I was
talking with my teacher and he said there are free ones, and
then ones that cost money.

I didnt ask the difference... I assume the one you have to
pay for is better?

Quoth: ill email you by the end of tonight...

you can buy the memory cards from boss/roland or from shops
like maplins.they are called "smartmedia" cards. i think the
202 can take 2 or 4 MB cards, but dont quote me on that.

Zeus : there's the original cSound, and then there are
front-ends. the original cSound is basically a programming
language into which you input all the opcodes (oscillators,
filters, delay lines, etc.) for the "orchestra" and usually
the "score" too (cSound's version of a sequencer, in a text
file.) however, you can buy front-ends which have graphical
icons instead of opcodes so that you don't have to look at
lines and lines of code. this is how I understand it. I'd
recommend that you try the text version first, just to get a
taste of what cSound's about. it's free, man!

I was kinda curious why you were thinking about csound as
well...seems to be a lot more activity around MAX/MSP &
Pure-Data (and it's various addons)...

but maybe csound is a good intro into that sort of
programming...I know a lot of people don't like controlling
software with textfiles; all my Ray Tracing work is done in
POVRAY which uses em to
describe a scene... front-ends are available to make the
text file for ya, but as I'm a programmer & am used to it, I
prefer to just use notepad...

The big plus point for textfile control is the ability to
write programs that output the files....programs that create
programs...that's really the key....

zeus:

i didn't get an email :(

btw, the smart media cards are a very very very rare kind...
they're 3.5v & i think the only way one would find them
around is by searching on ebay or something :)

cool...programming like that is a bloody good way to get
into track making & syntesis....

Look at AFX for example...he was doing loads of ZX81 &
Spectrum programming back in the day....hence the huge
number of references to them in his tracks/artwork...
