how exactly Josh Davis (Dj shadow) makes music? i know endtroducing is completely samples, but say on private press..I know he'll take a sample for one song, like on mongrel that guitar bit, but is everything on there from records, cuz he only singles out certain samples in the liner notes..is that because he uses that sample in the direct original manner it sounds like? How does he do his drum work too, i'm just slightly confused

im not sure the exact equipment he's been using lately...but...my guess is that
he uses a sampler to take bits from records..then uses a sequencer and a mixer to mix them with other bits from other records and compose them into songs..im assuming (he claims to have only used his turtables and a sampler to make endtroducing)
as far as drum work goes...he will sample a beat (usually some sort of break beat...though not always) and loop it with the sampler and arrange it with other looped drum samples
i think the samples he lists in the liner notes are the ones he got legal clearence for
there's been a bunch of interviews with him lately..some of which he describes bits of his process...track them down if you want more accurate information

I would imagine he makes his songs like this: (and Im no music equipment buff so im probably wrong)
1) Listen to a record that you like
2) If you like the drums, same the music and cut out all the other sounds (guitar, singing, etc)
3) Take the drum loop and mess around with it...cutting and splicing
4) Make your own rhythm
5) Take a piano peice from a song and cut out everything else.
6) Add this to the drums and sequence it
7) Keep adding various 'found samples' until you have a sustaining library of usable sounds.
8) Compose your song with this samples and sequence them.
Not so hard is it? Or maybe it is... *strokes his chin*

weatheredstoner, i think he's very good at what he does, he is the best thief (i hesitate to say that) out there, in that he takes things and turns them into completely different beasts..amonbrune, that sounds about right...wayout, i did read a nice interview lately, i think it's in my favorites, i'll check it out

he only credits samples when he has to (heavy sampling or popular song). everything on both album has been 100% samples. he's a genius.

Theres a really cool long interview with him in this months The Wire ...
His method for the new one is pretty much the same as before, MPC (sampler/sequencer beloved of the hiphip cru) and turntable to sample from...although he's moved away from sampling your standard sample fare such as funk records...The Private Press is a reference to all those little tiny lables that might put out 100-200 copies of a release, stuff with a very limited audience...
Check out Monosyllibic..he set himself the task of creating a whole song from just one 2 bar drum/guiar/bass loop...outstanding stuff, & working within limitations is a smooth way of approaching something creatively....
He also says quite a bit in the interview how he's a bit tired of people concetrating on his method and how he does stuff, what records he samples etc...it's more important to him that the music comes across rather than his particular techniques...
Great interview; don't think it's online tho...
Josh Davis(DJ SHADOW) is not Josh Davis(Praystation) ... two different guys (both real funky tho..;)

There's a good article at www.spinemagazine.com He explain's his ideas for how he was to go about making Private Press.

i wouldnt call it stealing.
its a collage art.
now, like a puffy song, thats stealing. its cheap... thye take the one hook, and rap over it.
dj shadow takes bits and peices from all over and puts it in an entirly new context.
he is the epitomy of the post modern musician.
