i know i can't be alone in this- i've become so quickly fed
up of all these radiofriendly "i may be popular and hip but
i'm really a stuck up intelligent rock&roll mastermind"
groups like The Hives and The Strokes and The White Stripes
etc...it's dull, BORING. i can't escape the crap music
because YEAH SURE I can turn off my television and not
listen to the radio, but now my friends are obsessing over
these groups and it's all over

anyone with me? anyone not with me and want to explain why
they like such dull nirvana rip-off music?

If you call the Hives and the Strokes nirvana ripp-off music
im afraid i can't take you seriously.

(The Hives are swedish . yay!!!)

i have no real problem with these groups that you mention,
but i feel that guitar bands now should be making something
new and exciting, rather than looking to the past. it is
sure good to have that kind of inspiration, but i think
groups should maybe use it to go in other directions.

The Cooper Temple Clause!
Rock with electronics.

their influences (according to them)
Aphex Twin, The Who, Kraftwerk, Radiohead

I can't believe Rollinstone pronounced the Strokes as the
saviors of rock... they CAN'T live up to that...

It's a shame... they're really good, but they've been
overhyped too badly, and there's nowhere to go but down.
They're not revolutionary, or even trying to be, but they've
been called the next Velvet Underground... and they're not.
They're just a damn fine rock band.

i agree - hard to explain is an excellent song...that has a
nice structure to the phrases and stuff. i saw the hives on
tv and they have style.

i just don't like the way they model themselves on the sound
of older bands..the strokes even treat their vocals to sound
old!

offline Ophecks from Nova Scotia (Canada) on 2002-06-02 21:26 [#00246830]

That's fine... they're very retro, that's what they're
aiming for. They're not pretending to be some rock saviours,
it's the MEDIA that pinned them with that STUPID image.
They're just rocking out old style. I love the way they
model themselves like that! Nostalgic, pop music was better
in those times.

I just the hives on the radio....

never heared of hem until now

the host said "check it out, there's this great new band
called the hives. everyone's been asking me about it"
etc...

they sound like SHIT, imo....

don't worry if they're overrated if you like 'em. rock
doesn't need to be saved
mars del volta is mixing electronic and organic pretty well

offline hannibal from United Kingdom on 2002-06-02 21:47 [#00246856]
Points: 518 Status: Lurker

ah dude! the mars volta are fantastiko!
they have so much energy...if you haven't heard them - they
include members from at the drive-in, and theyre sort of
metallish...check out 'eunuch provocoteur' by them - the
lead guitar line in that just flows...

The Strokes and White Stripes are very bad. I really do not
like either of them. I don't like 'rock and roll'. It's
boring.

the hives are truly an awesome band, punk, stylish,
irreverent, ohh, and awedish.

strokes suck ass, i can´t stand that fuckup lead singer
playing the drunk rockandroll superstud.
about the white stripes, their white blood cells lp isn´t
THAT bad, the rest is shite.

I'm afraid to say this ,I don't like rock'n'roll.
No arguament as to why apart from its becoming pop music.

well music is music and the most important thing to me is
that it has something special compared to everyday music
often played on radio, but i cant sit here an lie cause
sometimes good music appears on the radio and on mtv such as
The strokes or weezer or the almighty Aphex twin.
the thing is just meant was that, good music is good music
and bad sucks.

offline fat kaimo from Finland on 2002-10-07 04:29 [#00395085]

ok.
the hives... i'm actually a bit dissappointed that they now
became such a big hit in uk & us... and people categorize
them with strokes & stripes.

and i'm dissappointed also with the hives because their big
$$ record deal & break-up from their past label, the punky
burning heart.

personally i think that the strokes are nice but boring, the
white stripes sometimes nice but also boring, and that the
hives really rock... but we'll see what happens to them with
their big $$$...

and the hype, damn i can't understand it. these trendy
magazines always want something fresh and end up making them
these damned products. i mean, a great band can become a
shit product, or a shit product band can became a hyped shit
shit product...

hmm... the vines? ughhh.

evening of cutting edge, forward-thinking music for sure.

Buried under this jumble of trendy power pop is Sloan, who
blows the rest of these amateurs out of the water. FUCK I
wish they'd get as popular as these wannabes.

i mean all this stuff is just insincere comidified rehash of
the stones, mc5, gang of four, the stooges, velvet
underground, and the pixies. why do any of you listen to it?

I'm not really one for all these 'new rock' bands myself..
though I do like The Vines in a way, sort of have a Dandy
Warhols feel to them in some songs and Dandy's are great.
meh.. anyway.. time to put some Tool on.

hehe i'd rather just listen to the dandy warhols! :) they
have a new album coming out soon, have you heard anything
about it? it comes out in the u.s. a few months after the
rest of the world, unfortuanately for me. i thought '13
tales' was a masterpiece personally!
