Self proclaimed "Godfather of Electronic Music" - Jean Michel Jarre - have made an enormous amount of totally lame music, in my opinion. Do you guys think he deserves any credit, or do you think - like me - that he is nothing but a....Pink Floyd of instrumental music? I must admit that I can still kinda like his 1982 album "Concerts in China", but after that he has just released pompous crap! I really laughed when I found out that Funkstörung had remixed him. What a nice way to take the piss! I think he is overrated! What do you think? |

1: Jarre is not "self-proclaimed" god father of electronic music...that thing started when he signed up with Sony Music back in 1997, in their press releases they declared him that..it was a marketing thing THEY made up and various media kept on calling him that too...from interviews i read with him he seems quite modest and he certainly didn't proclaim him self god-father of anything. 2: Oxygene and Equinoxe are two of the most influential and significant albums in electronic music. Jarre can quite accurately say that he is the first electronic composer to gain a significant world audience...and he no doubt helped spread and popularise electronic music and without him it wouldn't be the same today. 3: What exactly do you have against his music? What’s wrong with oxygene and equinoxe's beautiful melodies and textures? They are a great example of early analogue synths music, and as opposed to Tangerine Dream music for example, they are very natural sounding imho, not metallic like Rubycon and Pheadra 4: he made shitloads of music, his style varies dramatically. he has a 47 min ambient track called Waiting for Cousteau that i think is easily as good as any Brian Eno or RDJ ambient track... |

5: he made some amazing experimental music, for example Zoolook, its one of the first albums to use digital sampling techniques and is the first to use the legendary Fairlight Samplers... he used over 25 languages in the recording of this album..the amount of effort that was put into it is incredible... Ethnicolor is an epic track download it..and download Ethnicolor 2 6: his latest album in 2000 showed that he still has great ability imho, a track on it called Miss Moon is so fuckin good, I really think if some ppl here bother to dwnld it they are likely to enjoy it…he samples a water sprinkler throughout and integrates its sound brilliantly in the track which has some amazing effects and comes complete with weird chanting women |

7: his concerts are like no other. He quite literarily paints the sky and buildings with colours. He designs shows that use huge projections, videos, animations, lasers, lighting effects, fireworks and shitloads more effects that he perfectly synchronizes to his music while literarily transforming entire cities into pieces of art. They are FUCKIN massive, and are often attended by MILLIONS of ppl, they take fuckin ages to prepare, he puts a huge amount of effort and thought into his shows, the amount of creativity, skill and genius displayed in these shows are incredible Finally Jean Michel Jarre deserves credit because he is fuckin good, he is a true artist, he puts effort and thought into his work, and he is a significant influence. I used to have a few albums by him. I had most of them actually. I loved em and thought they were great. Then I woke, the scales fell from my eyes and I discovered that he actually was shit and what the hell did I ever hear in him? The only JMJs I still have are Chronologie Pt6 - the Slam & Gat Decor Remixes and Waiting For Cousteau (cos the title track is the only one I still like: 46 minutes of ambience - rather good still that one) So... yeah... big dog's cock |
