you mean, conforming to pop culture, peers, authority?
please elaborate.

it's pretty much a social construct of the mind....somethign
we invented and encourage, I think it can snowball into
something horrible (ie the S.S. and the Nazi's), and it
encourage one to drop what makes them unique

i think most people against conforming are conforming
anyway.
i am who i am naturally.
if i end up looking like others, its cause that's what i
am.

my tastes in life may be that of the same of others, but
they are still mine.
i really believe that conforming is excepting things without
knowledge of its source.
its excepting things just to except them.
not because you want to.
or would like to.

i think many so called rebels, are just conforming to
wanting attention. so that act wild and ignorant.
some call them goths.
some call them wiggers.
i just see them as ignorant.
they don't know their source.

Conforming sometimes is good I think... but also going
against the majority is good sometimes as well... you gotta
stand up for what you believe, and be yourself and all, but
you can't do it all the time... I don't know, it's hard to
say... you just have to be yourself... if you're going
against who you are then it's just unnatural, and not
good...

its definately hard to be yourself all the time.
some people have trouble accepting you, because they are
ignorant.
they don't wonder why you think or act a certain way, they
just assume.
but, i do hate when people act depressed and dark just cause
they are goths.
or talk and act in stupid ways just cause they are wiggers
and thats their thing.

i think that people still need reasons to their actions.
people need to be real.

by using english, or any structured language, we are
conforming surelY?

No. We are conditioned to use english. Altho I guess thats
conformity.

We were conditioned to enjoy lord of the rings. That kinda
pissed me off.

i always think it is funny how people join a "group" of
"peers" to avoid conforming to the mainstream, but actually
some people end of conforming to that alternative group
obssessively, and end up just as shallow as any boring
mainstream person. they make sure they have all the right
clothes and accessories for their group, and affliate
themselves to all the proper music, books, movies for their
supposedly non-conforming alternative group... so they can
feel like they belong. i've seen gay and lesbian guides
literally listing what is supposed to be their favorite
music, movies, and the "correct" styles of clothing, to make
sure they fit in correctly... seems kinda silly to me...

other examples are obvious... religions, cults, goths,
punks, club kids, professional upscalers, bodybuilers,
hicks... whatever... at least this "IDM" doesnt have a dress
code...

w/out pressure &tc?

offline Asche XL on 2002-04-06 18:05 [#00160343]

I totaly agree with zombiekev, you need to conform to some
extent once and while to "avoid conflicts" with idiots who
dont understand you...

so that would be a compromise then - and if someone didn't
understand me because they mentally unable to, i wouldn't
compromise

actually we just learned about this type of thing in
Psychology... people do tend to conform when in groups...
for instance, if you're in a group, and you have to answer
this question, if you don't know the answer yourself, and
all the other group members answer the same answer, you're
probably gonna conform and say the same answer... but that
makes sense, cause you just assume that the other people
know, and that they're right... but it also worked for when
you thought you knew, but everyone else said a different
answer... you're more likely to choose there answer I
believe... but I dunno, that's kinda different then
conforming to a group about likes and dislikes and all that,
but I suppose it's similar in a way too... :)

I'm such a loner, that it seems the only way of life I
conform to is my own. I'd wear the same fucking shirt for a
week straight if it was socially acceptable... I don't
conform to some dresscode. But I mean, I have to conform
SOMEWHAT, don't want to be TOO much of a slob. :-)

Nobody understands me, and I'm not going to change or act
differently because I want to be accepted.

[RANT]For me, conforming is adopting ideas and the culture
of a group that my not have been your before.

i try not to conform, but its very hard to try and lead your
own life 24/7. Sometimes its cool to take in styles as much
as it is to make your own.[/RANT]

Ophecks, by saying that nobody understands you, aren't you
conforming to that classical (ie cliched) symptom of
teen-angst? (i have no idea how old you are bTW)

exactly.

offline The_Funkmaster from St. John's (Canada) on 2002-04-06 18:19 [#00160356]
Points: 16280 Status: Lurker

yeah, conforming is good in some instances... an example, if
I had some friends over, and we wanted to put some music on
while we played a board game (it has happened) well I'm not
gonna put on Autechre or Aphex Twin, cause I know that they
wouldn't like it... so in that case I would conform to try
and please each person there... in a case like that I think
that conforming is a good thing... it doesn't mean I'm
compromising who I am or anything, it's just that I don't
need to annoy these people with this music that I know they
wouldn't like, so I'll put something on that we all like...

offline Ophecks from Nova Scotia (Canada) on 2002-04-06 18:20 [#00160357]

I have no teenage angst, I don't GIVE a shit that nobody
understands me. And they don't. That's just fine, it's the
way I like it. I'm not really COMPLAINING about it,
angst-style, just pointing it out. People around me know I'm
nothing like them, and let me do my own thing.

well if it's in your record collection, then choosing to
play something else over aphex twin is a compromise
more than an act of conformity, surely? i do not mean you
are compromising your principles or anything

yeah i didn't say you had teen angst, just that the specific
statement you made conformed to an.."axiom" of teen-angst -
just an example of how it really is nigh on impossible to
escape conformity really

Aphex Twin, so I'll put on this cd which you guys like
instead"...

of myself!!!

Isn't it great to walk around your college and see everyone
in the same Columbia jacket, and the same Gap sweater, and

the same everything... hell, even the way people do their
hair... it's illegal not to gel it up and do that spiky
thing, apparently.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have no desire to be a part of
any of these ridiculous cliques, and I know they think I'm a
loser, and I don't care, but they still get under my skin...
but they're just so boring and average and normal...
there's not enough interesting and unique INDIVIDUALS
around, so these cliques really get on my nerves, even
though I try not to let them.

all good yada yada yada, hehe and she was eating it all up,
i thought it was funny in a way, but still. By bs'in a bunch
of people i got like 20 sn's and #'s so i duno. I think its

conformity is ingrained into you from birth and its your
brain naturaly questioning why you are living a life that
isn't natural to what you where born to do.

I dont see what the problem Is. Really if you dont conform
sometimes you get stuck in the same spot socially in life,
for the rest of your life. I was not about to be one of
those crust punks when im 40 years old.

I dont speak up on my soap box like these fools. Conforming
is something that happens anyway. Socially especially. And
its ok to do for certain reasons I think.
