yeah, i think they both did their own thing very, very well. no need to pick one, they were sufficiently different when it came to music. the stuff they did together was fun too.

When they were touring together, Art Tripp said it was like having two of the hugest egoes clash every time they were around each other, Beefheart used to draw pictures of Zappa as satan and other characters in his sketchbook all the time.

zappa is approximately 10359871592 times better than beefheart in terms of musicianship. beefheart couldn't even count a rhythm and needed help recording due to that.
beefheart - utter shit, for the most part, in my opinion

yeah, beefheart just seemed more like a painter with a lot of paint to throw down on a canvas.
zappa was all about composing music.
