I have an ipod which i love...but the zune has one up'd it...in a minor way. I just read that Gen 1 Zunes OS/firmware can be updated to the newest version that ships with all new Gen 2 models. All the new features etc. Something apple claims they can't do for older ipods which is just bullshit. The 5th gen ipods and ipod classic's are pretty much the same beast, they both do the same thing and have the same guts just a different case & storage size. People have modified their 5th gen. ipods to do coverflow and have the new menu...so why can't apple just stop being a bunch of bitches and give the user the option to use the new menu design.

as far as i knew, the iPod classic is actually different internally from the 5th Gen
also the supposed hacks to get 5th Gen to run Coverflow aren't actually running the same firmware as the iPod Classic....it's a dirty hack from what i've read, and isn't without it's glitches.
although i do agree with you that it shouldn't be too trivial for Apple to allow the 5th Gen to have the same firmware
but then how would they make their money?

As an owner of both an ipod 5th gen, zune 30 and as of yesterday a Zune 80, the Zune firmwares blow the ipod firmware away. The only functionality that the older Zune 30 didnt inherent from the new firmware is the ability to play a couple of new video formats which are hardware dependant on the newer Zune. A Kraftwerk Zune is available here, which is pretty cool:
