do you think you're turning...

...into one of those people that are forever mourning the
lost days of when music was good, and you simply refuse to
pay attention to anything modern because it "all sounds the
same"?

scarily, i think i turned into one of those people a long
time ago :-s i feel like a musical dinosaur.

and i still can't "get into" anything that's particularly
modern. i guess i'm just a victim of my own generation, and
i'm sure that a lot of other people may fall into this too
(at least i hope so, i don't wanna be on my own here)

so...does anyone else think that they've hit that point
where they think along the same lines?

was thinking about this on the way home from work a few days
ago and thought i'd post it here

^^^ I'm with Optimus on this one. Just need to know where to
look... and it's certainly not on the radio.

Experimental label forums and just delving in to music
communities really helps.

That being said - I still like my early jazz - but then
there's also been some great 2007 (non jazz) releases.
Surprised I like the new Animal Collective as much as I do.
And then there's the Dragons of Zynth, Boy Is Fiction ,
Burial , machinefabriek, Brightblack Morning Light, Black
Moth Super Rainbow... the list goes on and on and on.

i like to think i'm not... but i do get very bleary eyed and
nostalgic when someone mentions the 90's...

...i'm still discovering an average of 1 awesome thing per
week... this week its:

Amp Fiddler

and then last week i discovered:

Ely Guerra..

and so forth...

I think the ideas are there "maybe" but the actual skill
isn't there anymore. The way studios record now. Its not
about being a good player anymore..Ive been listening to Led
Zeppelin. Good god, The playing in that band. The millions
of melodic ideas being fired off in a single track. It just
doesn't happen anymore. As far as real instrument music.
Yes, I think it was better back in the day. Synth and
effects based music is different.

"i personally believe music keeps getting better and
better."

i agree with that statement too... there will always be
something cool, even if there are dull periods new things
are starting up and gain momentum and then you're
backtracking trying to catch up with the next thing that
interests you. i use to be a metal head, then i got into
aphex and electronic stuff. and there are times when i get
bored with electronic stuff, but this music just keeps
evolving and new and interesting things pop up so
quickly...there were points when i thought metal or
electronic stuff couldn't get any better but it did...it
has, and it will. Although i hardly listen to metal
anymore. while mainstream idiots will still want generic
crap, there will always be a group of people who demand good
content. and if they can't find it they'll make it.

i do feel like an old fart though about mainstream stuff.
American Idol fans amaze me. what rubbish. And then there
are the two retarded chicks i work with. They constantly
bring me crap telling me its just like Radiohead when its
more like crybaby trustfund EMO bullshit, or i think one of
them told me the new John Mayer album was just like a Pink
Floyd record.

these two idiots enjoy those 'acts' not artists that are
created in marketing boardroom meetings... they're more
obsessed with the singers hotness rather than their ability
to play & write. so it doesn't bother me that they like
those type of things for what they're made for, i just hate
when they carry on about how good the music is when its not.

If they enjoy something that you don't get they aren't
idiots. You're idiom isn't the same as theirs. Saying that
music is shit these days.

as roygbivcore has quite rightly stated, my avatar is a
screenshot from Oldboy. it's from my favorite shot in the
whole film. the shot is framed perfectly, the lighting is
amazing.

and yes, Oldboy is at the top of my film list. hard choice,
but it's still a winner

jivverdicker you might have misread what i typed...they are
idiots to begin with. Right down to the valley girl
personality and vocabulary.

I didn't call them idiots for the music they listen to. I
said i thought it was cool that they like whatever they
like. Its all a matter of personal taste. I don't expect
them to be into my music at all. Mostly they want to blow
the lead singer of some shit band that wrote songs so they
could get dumb bitches to blow them...but they actually
think that music is the best thing out there. when its not.
i should ask them tomorrow who their favorite artist is so
i can give you an idea of the kind of vapid shit I'm talking
about from the lyrics alone.

I wasn't trying to compare it to anything i listened to. i
was just trying to make the point that I'm made to feel like
a weirdo b/c i don't listen to mainstream pop/radio music
like they do...when they can't see past the fact that
they're listening to manufactured music/artists instead of
people who are actually musicians. And when they try to
explain what they like about who ever it sounds like they're
reading from a press release instead of really explaining
the music from their own feelings/thoughts.

Think of it as the annoying twats in school that were all
about the new kids on the block

I know exactly what you are talking about. I was just
supposing that I don't give a shit about a door frame and
there are plenty of angry carpenters telling me otherwise
but I don't give a shit. The door works, I'm listening to
my fun music.

It's a waste of time complaining about other people 'not
getting it'. Why care? Listen to 'your' music and have some
fun.

That probably wasn't very clear! My doors are 2 inches and 4
inches bigger than the 'norm'. I need a door. I don't need
to know the history or prominant innovators in doors.

Electronic music has gone down hill soo much these days....

Its like when my parents hear twinkly bells on a documentary
they go "its aphex music!" No,..no its not, Aphex would
never use preset 53 on a dx 5. he'd play with the fourth
operators modulation envelope clearly, Dad! You just don't
get it. I wish you weren't my parents! Gah, Im going to my
room.

Haha! He can make a 'twinkly' Tambourine/high hat/snare
sound. That's about it. Not a nice register though. a+ for
effort.

I think people are confusing not liking music with getting
old :D
My (older) brother was explaining this too me a long time
ago, and it's true. The older you get the more out of touch
you naturally get.
If I were 15 I would be shitting my pants with all the cool
music that is out now. When I hear these bands though a lot
of them don't seem new or fresh, they all kind of seem like
they are copying each other trying to get that extra 1000+
hits on their myspace.

It happens to everyone since the dawn of culture, when
you're young you start hoovering up books, films, art,
music, absorbing it all... then you get older and your
priorities change and you don't need, for whatever reasons,
to feel that you're keeping on top of every thing. It's
probably some psycholgical thing about, society I don't
know, or hormones.

What I find funny is that most of the bands I see on TV seem
like a bunch of drippy sixth formers, even though most of
them are probably about my age or a little bit older. When
channel four does a hip music show it's like talent night
down the local youth club.

sure there's plenty of music i can't "get into" that's
contemporary. but there's plenty of music that's not
contemporary that i can't get into as well. i can't stand
ragtime, so when the big ragtime revival comes i'm out of
luck.

i don't have any interest in keeping up with anyone or
anything. if i haven't heard it, it's new to me. i don't
expect anyone to like what i like. as i've gotten older my
tastes have changed and i'm sure they'll continue to change
but at a slower rate. i'm already pretty old so i think if
i was going to lose interest in music i would have done so
by now.
