Is it really possible that there is no Tom Waits
appreciation thread on any possible music forum,
whether it is on the internet or in the real world?!

Is it really possible that there is no Tom Waits
appreciation thread on xltronic dot com?!?

Currently drinking red wine (I'm out of all other kinds of
alcohol) and listening to Alice. The man has a consistently
great output, and he has had so for just about every album
he has managed to put out. I don't know what his recipe is,
but it seems to be a combination of fun and real music or,
rather, real music, born from the very real and true
relationship between a man and music. His music.
Our music.

Sometimes it feels good to be reminded of something you
already knew. For instance that Tom Waits makes great music,
and that red wine makes you drunk. Not that the two are in
any way related (whisky is more suitable for Tom Waits, but
I'm all out). I'm also not implying that alcohol is required
to enjoy Tom Waits, nor that it in any way "enhances" the
experience (as those hasj fuckheads would have you believe
hasj does (it doesn't, so shut up)), I'm just saying that's
how it is right now, and that I love the music.. and the red
wine.

Oh, just put on some Tom Waits and shut the fuck up!

yeah, i had an argument with someone about that not too long
ago... i think some of his fans could make that impression,
but really, for me it's his fucking amazing music that
shines through.

Yeah, I know, and I think it is because they think that when
he sings with a "funny" voice, or a voice that isn't his
"original" voice, he must be trying to "sound cool" or
something, and he probably does indeed think that it sounds
cool, but in a different sense from what they mean
when they say "cool." In other words, I think he makes the
music he thinks is cool, and the music is indeed cool. On
Monday I'll buy Blue Valentine on vinyl.. I've seen it
sitting in the store all alone, (tom) wait(s)ing to get
bought.

(lol @ me)

Yeah, I can see how that last play-on-words joke could be
way over some people's heads.

Although that did indeed cause wincing, it wasn't really the
reason I felt spurred to write what I wrote.

My favourites:
Rain Dogs
Swordfishtrombones
Alice
Bone Machine
Mule Variations
Real Gone

I don't much like his pre-Swordfish stuff. He got
interesting from 1983-onwards.

What's the matter with Frank's Wild Years?

Also, the first half of Blue Valentines is classic and the
second to last song is great too. It takes a sweet little
bullet from a pretty blue gun to put them scarlet ribbons in
yo hair. Haghghg!

I can see how people could be turned off by the theatrics;
they're just tools. All decent songwriters lie.

I'm a very austere person, and not prone to make fun of
things.
