Like most of us here on XLT, I'm sure we have a shit load of files that we need to archive.
This week I have been going through all my old cdrs and have noticed that some I burnt 7-8 years ago do not work anymore.
I was thinking of salvaging everything onto a portable external HD.
What do you suppose the shelf life on these are? Will the information fade away like these CDR's ?
This is the one I got my eye on ... 160 gig
What do you think ? OR should I just back it up to Tape or cut it all into Vinyl ? Cassette? 5 1/4 Diskettes? Punch cards?

You might want to try to find some Taiyo Yurden DVDRs. I hear they are good for archiving things.

I say: go for it. However, since this is mainly for long time storage and not for carrying things around, maybe you should consider one of those bigger 3,5" disks which require external power. There are also ready multi-drive solutions using various modes of RAID matrices, so if you are serious about what you back up, this should be the way to go.
Myself I have two 250GB external disks, one very slim 2,5" and the other a very bulky 3,5". Both from WD. I really cannot say anything about their reliability since the older of the two (3,5") is only 1 year old. They have been used very intensely however and up until now not even a minor issue occured. Also, I'm not known for treating my equipment in a very careful manner while travelling and in general.
My father has been succesfully using a no-name 30GB 2,5" for the last 6 years or so.
As for optical discs, my recommendations go to Verbatim, Sony and Fujifilm. I cannot be arsed to check their manufacturers.

Cool, I think I'll buy it !
I just hope it doesn't erase after 30-40+ years of not being used ...
