Spending ages on a broken track

So frustrated. You've got this track, you've been spending
ages and ages on it, and there's still something "broken"
and off with it. You twiddle and fiddle for hours and then
you play it in the car or on another system and it STILL
sounds wrong.

Then there's other tracks you do in a couple of hours and
they sound great.

I don't understand. But it's very frustrating, because these
tracks are often so close to being right, but something just
isn't working.

AGHHHH.

Music making can be infuriating.

Well, look at it this way. At least you have not just ground
to a halt. That is where i am. So at least you have
something that sounds wrong.

Silver linings and all that shit.

Why have you ground to a halt? I liked your stuff very much.
keep at it, sir! Watch Inland Empire or go for a walk in
some deranged countryside to inspire you. ;-)

... it feels like everything has been a waste of time. But I
guess there's always a lot of material to salvage from a
track like that thanks to the joys of digital.

argh im in the same situation

i wrote a song i thought was really good. many people
agreed. its the first song here; called 'time
flies'. doesnt really sound like anything else. its nice and
to the point and didnt take all that long, and leaves a nice
feeling behind when you've finished listening to it.

but everything ive written so far just doesnt quite cut it
as much as that track did.

the latest one ive been working on took bloody ages and just
doesnt sound... right. it doesnt leave you satisfied when
its finished... no amount of tweaking will pull it out of
that.

i think the only way to get over it is to just give it a
rest for a while.

i hope?

Making music is the easiest thing on earth.

but making sound like what you had in your head is way hard

Well, that depends on how critial a mood you're in, the
quality of the music you've created before ("is this new
material as good?"), and as rad smiles pointed out, how keen
you are on making something sound like it does in your head
(that's obviously pretty easy for the melodic, rhythmic and
harmonic elements of a track, but it's tricker to re-create
specific sounds or atmospheres that are in your head.)

thats what i mean. i doubt very many people at all ever
accomplish that.

I doubt that too, but often it seems to be like that,
doesn't it? - when things are flowing really well and you're
following your intuition and creating sounds on the fly -
they're great moments, and you often forget how you ended up
with the track and all those sounds, but it all works and
makes musical sense.

if a track doesn't sound right for me i tend to erase it
rapidly before i loose a lot of time on it.

for me personally the most frustrating thing is when you
have a great sound preset on a synth that just won't fit to
anything and you try to make a song around it.

Watching those Depeche Mode documentaries included with the
delux reissues made me realize that all those frustrating
hours I've spent trying to get a track right was not so bad
after all. I think they spent to weeks mastering people are
people and when they got to the mastering of the Black
Celebration album Gareth Jones looks suicidal. Making music
is a pain in the arse, really...

I wonder what Richard does when he is stuck?

I've been doing this recently and have finally put the
touches on about 6 tracks, close to seven which I think
turned out fantastically. (Not sharing them yet.) It takes
time and absence of work to make something good I think.

Mainly i just don't think i am up to it. The ideas are there
it's just the actual sitting down to do it that is the
problem. I get there and get stuck really. I am thinking
that just having some time off is the best thing. Wait until
the ideas explode from my head on to the computer.

Remember folks, a computer is not pre-requisite for musical
composition.

I am too busy playing Bach preludes & fugues at the moment
to condescend to music making.

Playing Bach preludes and fugues provides an effective
prerequisite to decent music creation. Music making and
classical performance go hand in hand quite nicely, sir.
There's no condescending about it. The ratfucker might agree
actually.
