 | anybody know of software that'll fingerprint an mp3, check with a database and then report back the artist/title of a
 track?

 | No, sorry mate. Only thing on a related topic might be worth doing a search on how the microsoft sounds in one version
version of windows were created using a pirate copy of audio
software (cool edit perhaps?). It was discovered (and can be
proven) by audiowatermarking. Essentially, when you open the
.wav as a text file, the header details the program it was
 made in.

Definately nothing so clever as checking up a database
though, that was just spotted by some geek with too much
 time on their hands.

 | I believe the RIFF headers in the wavs said something like "made in soundforge - cracked by blah" that's how it was
 discovered.

 | If your looking for something that will display the artist/name of track AFTER The file has been executed it
would be pretty easy to write.

 256236.mp3 [plays][sends info to DB]my song name database[db
 receives info][checks id '256236'][compare tables tblmp3s to
 tblNames][retrieves row][sends back to client]

Some shotty pseudocode , but it wouldn't be to hard to do
 this with some XML.

 | There's no way of using the last.fm fingerprint databases to identify a mp3 that you have though.

I can't wait till there is, however.. I'm very excited about
 this project of theirs.

 | Don't you just play it into your phone and dial 2580 for the shazam service? They text you if they know it, otherwise
it's free. I've used it a couple of times. It's hit and
miss, but it amazes me it can do it sometimes with the
 amount of background noise.
