Selected Ambient Works II--Instrumentation

Hello, this might be a daft question, but I was wondering
what sort of synthesizer might have been used on SAW II, on
songs like Lichen, Rhubard, Stone in Focus, etc... my hunch
is a Roland SH-101, though don't know if that's correct.
Also I heard that Squarepusher used this synth a lot, and
I'm wondering if that's the sound on songs like Tommib and
Tommib Help Buss.
Thanks for your time and cheers--
Jordan

Rhubarb is my favorite track on there.

However, those actually arent synths he is using on the
album. It seems RDJ managed to figure how to bottle and
save all the prayers and wishes of everyone who looks at
porno on the internet. The sound you are hearing is him
actually taking a field trip to the Mississippi bayou and
releasing these bottled thoughts out into crocodile infested
waters. That and licorice. He uses licorice on there too.

hi jasnik,

there'll actually be some people with the ability to give a
straight answer. there aren't many, so you just have to be
patient for a bit.

We've had a discussion about the SAWII equipment before, and
most of us concluded a lot of it was digital. Dunno if that
helps.

lol, bottled thoughts / crocodiles was my next guess, it was
between that and the Roland.

Nope, not many 101-type sounds on there at all and the 101
isn't very good at pads (which is what SAW2 is, mainly) at
all.

As futureimage says, the previous consenus was that it
sounds like early digital synths.

Thank you, that is interesting to hear... I guess I was
projecting more onto the SH 101 than it actually was.

The SH-101 is good for basslines, corny sci-fi sound
effects, and acidy type stuff. BoC used a pair of them an
awful lot in their earlier work.

Wouldn't be suprised if there's some degree of Yamaha DX...

Hmmm, that's interesting (about the DX). A friend of mine
was trying to approximate the sound of Squarepusher's
"Tommib" on a Yamaha RS-7000 and I was trying to create some
sort of ambient music with the same synth but it didn't seem
to have either the warmth or sharpness that I was looking
for (which is why I thought maybe the 101 was what the sound
was), but it's interesting to hear about an older model...
reading about one it sounds expensive, though! I wonder if
some of the later models of the DX sound as good as the
DX1.
Cheers, Jordan

I think alot of the time there is a digital synth involved,
or perhaps one of the higher polyphonic Roland Jupiter or
Junos.

But then i think alot of it is to do with external filtering
and effects. I think the Roland Space Echo, which is
deffinatley used on SAWII, adds certain textures and
compression to the input sound.

Hmmm, I went back and read a previous thread on this topic,
didn't realize that it had been so exhausted... in a more
general question, has anyone tried using the Oberheim Matrix
1000 rack-mounted synth? I wonder if it matches the sound of
the Matrix 6 or 12.
Cheers, Jordan
