I think it was the shameless ripping-of of BoC's sound and imagery and then lying about it that caused people to hate him and rip the piss, not the actual music itself (which is amongst the better BoC clones).

the boomkat review is, i think, unfair and not exactly accurate. it's true, boards of canada had a strong influence on a lot of electronic artists, including tycho. but having heard tycho's album myself, as well as other tracks he's made, the boc influence is just a small (though unambiguous) part. as much as i like boards of canada, their influence is overstated and exaggerated. in addition, tycho's album incorporates a lot of elements that are distinctly different from boc. the "boc ripoff" label is lazy shorthand for critics who make up their minds after reading the titles of the tracks (a few of which do seem to imitate boc).
tycho has a knack for composition, arrangement and sound design and he makes some killer tunes. where he borrows from others, he brings enough to the table himself to pull it off.
why'd boomkat choose to single out the tycho album (and a couple other records)? my guess is that they want you to think they are being objective in their otherwise consistently glowing "reviews" of the product they sell.
not everyone's going to like the record, but i think some people will be surprised that the album is as strong as it is.

I think the Boomkat review is entirely accurate and you've either been listening to something you've mistaken for Tycho or you've never listened to Boards of Canada, or both.

hmm.. i thought the first sample sounded fairly interesting, but then the second sample starts out with a lead sound that is almost exactly the same as the one in the sample prior. I can't really comment as I haven't heard the full album (I'm waiting in line to download this on soulseek), but as of now I'm on the fence. I have to say, the BoC overtones are difficult to ignore, especially considering some of the track titles and sounds. There are plenty of great artists who are derivative of another style, but I do get annoyed when all of an artists tracks sound the same. Hopefully the album is diverse enough to hold my attention.

i don't think reviewing an album based on song titles or short clips is valid. my opinion is based on hearing the whole album, and a non-album comp track. i own all of boc's releases. in the end i don't care what anyone likes or doesn't like, but boc's mythical status is shallow and phony, and given how many other artists have been accused of the old boc-ripoff claims (casino vs japan, freescha, anyone and everyone using a wobbly rhodes or steady hip hop beat) i'm going to wait and hear the album before i make up my mind. i've heard the whole tycho album, and it's pretty damn good.
did anyone notice the lame imitation-boc titles that boc themselves gave the tracks on their last album? did anyone else notice that the music is half-baked and uninventive? did anyone notice that they either recycle their own ideas ad nauseum, or borrow ideas from recent trends (like the sudden emergence of poorly played guitars)? no matter how much you liked any of their other records, if you take away the brand name you lose most of the lustre.
whatever you do, base your reviews on the records, not the anti-hype or the song titles or the fucking clips. some of you are definitely going to like the tycho record, even if you don't want to admit it in public...

First off, I wasn't reviewing it. I'm just saying that based on the samples alone, it doesn't sound particularly original, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I'm still planning on giving the full album a proper listen.
As for BoC's recent efforts, I'm not really a fan. Music Has the Right to Children and Geogaddi are where BoC is at, as far as I'm concerned. However, you can't exactly disapprove of BoC having BoC-sounding titles the way you can disapprove of a different artist who sounds fairly similar of doing the same. Even if BoC are derivative of themselves, it's still derivation based on a formula they created, which is where I think many people make the distinction when they write-off Tycho. Did that make any sense?

I've heard the album but like Ceri said the shameless ripping of BoC's sound and imagery is off-putting.
I think the least he could have done is go for a different 'look' if he's going for that 'sound'.

zephyr, sorry to imply that you were reviewing based on the samples, i know you did say you would reserve judgement until you heard the album.
i appreciate your perspective. when someone creates a sound thats fresh, you want them to be credited. when someone apes their sound with little creative input, it seems a bit unfair. obviously there has been no shortage of people aping boc through the years, some good and some bad. i wasn't sold on tycho when i heard samples of his stuff a couple years before the album was rereleased on merck. it was a compilation track "dream as memory" that changed my mind (and part of this track is a very boc keyboard melody in an otherwise very un-boc track). so i checked the album, and was surprised that he brought a lot more to the record than the obvious boc influence.
i've heard so many substanceless accusations of bands ripping off other bands through the years. everyone seems to love slowdive these days, but years ago they were slammed as my bloody valentine ripoffs. his name is alive were accused of ripping off the cocteau twins. aphex twin was accused of ripping off brian eno (which he was guilty of, with excellent results).
sorry to beat a dead horse everyone...

No, you aren't beating a dead horse. In fact, I appreciate that you took the time to explain in detail how you feel. I was fairly sure that you weren't directing that post at me 100% but I spoke up so that hopefully you wouldn't have the wrong idea about me. I'm certainly not one to judge a book by its cover. Now, if I could just get the album to download on soulseek so I could try it out, that'd be ace. :)
