Im about to switch over just for web browsing .apparently
its rather secure for that and downloading.

i had it once before it was pretty cool....although to do
anything i seemed to have to type loads of code n stuff and
rip lots of hairs out of my head. aswell i think j there is
only one pci sound card in the world that works with it haha
whatever.. it'll be fun to try it out again.

 | I use and support ubuntu at work. It's very easy to get to grips with. The add/remove program wizard is great.

Why not dual boot with Windows & ubuntu for a while first?
Also when you boot to the ubuntu CD you can test your system
 for compatibility.

You will not need to wrestle with the terminal much, perhaps
familiarize yourself with the apt-get command for getting
 cool/useful software upgrades.

I may try it on one of my PCs. It would be awesome if my

 included.
Terminal is very usable for downloading/installing new
 things by apt-cache, and apt-get :)

when they're told they have to use the console to do
 something

 | I was really into the idea of using ubuntu solely, but due to my studies I have to use a lot of Microsoft programs like
 Visual Studio and VB etc.

When I graduate (which is soon) I will concentrate on doing
more linux stuff because it is so much funner,

Ubuntu is rad, but the problems I ran into were with making
music with it. I couldn't find any programs I felt
comfortable with. Their trackers suck, skale doesn't even
run full screen on it, and all the stuff like rose studio
 didn't want to work. So I don't know ...

The plan is to have a ubuntu machine in the near future. I
don't want to dual boot either ... it seems to fuck up my
hard drive every time I do.

 | I strongly suggest people checking out Ubuntu. Yes it's linux, but as easy to use as windows. It's great ! A 2 week
learning curve but it's worth it.

 | Firefox and other mozilla browsers often crash on youtube when I use ubuntu...i've tried a lot of things to fix it but
it still crashes, Opera on Ubuntu is ok though.

For linux on a old computer I recommend Puppy Linux, it's
really fast and works pretty good on my old celeron 533. You
can even compile software on it with an addon file. I also
find it somehow simpler to work with than with ubuntu. It's
also easy to get rid of if you don't like it, it boots of
the cd and writes a file to the harddrive for saved settings
 and extra programs

On windows you can surf the internet safely too(...I hope :)
 ) using sandboxie from http://www.sandboxie.com/
Things like NoScript help a lot too

because of some problem with the LaTex editor I had
installed, so i returned to good old XP.

 | Of course, i'm using desktop enviroment - GNOME 2.18. It goes by default in ubuntu.

There is many other desktop enviroments, but GNOME and KDE
 is the most popular ones.

The new version of KDE - KDE4 is noe in development and
going to be released in December of this year.

Here is some shots of alpha versions of KDE4:

 | The new ubuntu comes out on the 10th of October I think. If I were you, I'd wait until then.
I've got a much older copy on a computer, it's probably the
"nicest" distro around at the moment.
I like the fact that it doesn't need masses of console
hacking for it to just work. Console hacking is fun, but
sometimes you just want instant gratification.

The best linux distro ever has got to be my own homebrew
one, which loads into a ramdisk from a bootable USB memory
stick.... yeah check out my 1337 skills. :)

The only question I have about ubuntu is, do they drink it
 in the Congo?
