Headphones or speakers?

When you listen to music, which do you normally use? I tend
to listen to about 65% of my music on headphones, mainly
because mine are very good (hd-650's) and I feel I can get
into the music more instead of it becoming background sound
as I concentrate on other things. My speakers simply cannot
compete :(

Speakers. Headphones usually only for late at night when
people are trying to sleep or if I'm mixing/mastering.

I used to use Alesis MK2 for monitoring, but they're dead
now so I dug out my logiteh z-540's instead. I've been in
plenty of studios and big nightclubs with serious systems,
but they never compare to my 650's for pure immersion in
sound imo. This is for all music btw, not just
ambient/downtempo stuff.

In fact, all the remerge stuff was made using headphone
monitors :D

Speakers mainly. Headphones for classical music and
sometimes for ambient/electro-acoustic stuff.

Those little white earpiece things you get with old radios
with a crinkly lead.

most music i did with headphones sucked on a stereo,
only few times its the other way round...

wearing phones outside is enough for me,
i take them off immedeatley entering my flat.
exceptions made

you know you listen to good stuff, when its hard to choose
between a full stereo and phones,
but usually i want to feel the bass and my
monitor speakers are quite clear aswell

Headphones regrettably , my tinnitus is at an all time high
it just fucking rings and rings and rings. I'm going to slap
my kid if I see them with a pair of headphones if I ever
have kids.

Get some soft white noise.. a fan or something. That keeps
it out without damaging your ears (remember: soft
white noise).

80% of the time headphones as they give me full enjoyment
when listening to music.

having speakers at 1,5 metres exactly on both sides as i
have em in my bedroom with the pc sounds nice too,
easy sweet spot.
im not a sound engineer but this setup works good
for me and my smallish jbl´s.

got the other jbl´s in the living room
at a normal distance which fills the room nicely aswell

good night

i prefer those headphones that are like big ear muffs, but
you have to buy like 4 pairs to compare them because what
makes some sound like ass and some sound great is a mystery.

you can get headphones that look like princess leias pom pom
hair style now.

our local hi-fi sales man said that they are very
fashionable now.

I might buy some.should keep me warm too during these so
very bitterly cold nights.

Speakers when I have a party and headphones when I cannot
disturb others around me. It's an easy choice.

i hear ya buddy. i have very sensitive hearing and infinite
ringing from years of headphone use and drumming. going to
sleep at night is sometimes really difficult with the noise
:(

When making music 90% headphones, 10% speakers (speakers
only really used during mastering)

When listening to music 10% headphones, 90% speakers.

Leonid, have you tried listening to white noise when you go
to sleep? I have heard that it is supposed to drown out the
tinnitus.

Speakers unless I'm walking or don't want to disturb
someone. Sound needs to bounce around and get some room to
groove.

i am planing on getting new headphones tomorrow
i am considering getting.
Sennheiser HD-650(read that you might need an headphone
amplifier though to get them to their full use which i wont
buy) or
Sony MDR-SA3000.
anyone here have one of these two?
or does anyone have recomendations of really good headphones
to get for home use,and that dosent really need a headphone
amplifier?

Denon AH-D5000

I ran the HD-650's unamped for ages and they sounded fine.
But I now run them on my laptop's Echo Indigo IO which makes
an incredible difference thanks to the built-in headphone
amp. I'd never go back, it really does change everything.

Radio tuned to static at low volume would be a cheap
solution, you can get special sleep-inducing sound things
that offer white noise (amongst others, but white noise is
supposed to be best for tinnitus). I've heard of people
using a fan for the fan noise, but I'd imagine that'd use a
lot more power (plus you may not want a fan on) and the
range of frequencies it'd make would be narrower.

I heard some stupid extra super noise cancelling hundred or
so dollar gizmo pros and they weren't better than an awesome
25$ pair I had. You have to test them with subtle music like
little clicks and pops. Some headphones just blur all this
stuff making it suck like me.
