They say that piracy kills music, and they tell us to stop
downloading and support the artist but I also heard that
people who download mp3-files buy more music so it's also
good, but how can it be right? Are they only lying to us?
But if it is true they should tell us to download more and
we will buy more, if it's not some reversed psychology and
when they say "stop the downlaoding" they know that we think
"yeah right" and download more, but also buy more. So are we
tricked by the industry?

Don't think that your opinions are stupid, they are valuable
and you see things from other directions and angles. You can
reply.

Where did you hear that people that download mp3's buy more
music and why do you believe that? Why are you asking
economical questions based on heresay? Answer those first
and you'll have the answer to your other questions. Or just
google it.

I read in in a newspaper. I am critical to media, but I
don't think that article is lying, because the newspaper is
good. Now you can answer my questions.

be careful how you interpret these messages

I perceive it as download and share whatever you like, few
can afford everything, but wherever possible, do your best
to buy your favourite originals new (especially the small
independant young people) - because this way you are helping
the people that make the music you love continue to do so.
does that sound fair?

just coz someone says to buy the original it doesnt mean
don't download. having said that mp3's do not sound as good
as CD which do not sound as good as vinyl. but they are more
versatile. you need records and mp3's - CD's are usually a
waste of time unless it's ambient or classical or one of the
very best producers or you have the vinyl already as well
I know this coz i have 5000 records, 500,000 mp3's and about
500 CD's and am a very happy person.

I don't have too many mp3s, but the ones I have are
placeholders: I'm looking for the albums on vinyl or cd, but
some of them are hard to get, or just really really
expensive like Takagi Masakatsu's Coieda.

stupid so we understand each other. Which newspaper do you

Going through my stuff here I find that I've bought cd's for
the aprox. amount of 300£ online over the last six months.
And I guess I've spendt another 100£ in actual record
shops. That's about 400£ for the record industry in six
months...not bad is it? I can't say I feel very bad for
downloading and I do buy records I really like after
downloading them, if their worthy. I think all the fuzz
comes from the really commercial wing of the industry and
that it's all about greeeed!

We do exist (people who buy more real releases as a result
of hearing mp3s) All the following heard on MP3 first, all
bought within the last year or so:

Andy Stott - Merciless
Andy Stott - The Massacre EP
Andy Stott - Handle with Care
Burial - Burial (CD)
Burial - Burial (LP)
Burial - South London Boroughs
Cyrus - From the Shadows Part I (LP)
Cyrus - From the Shadows Part II (LP)
Cyrus - From the Shadows Part III (LP)
Cyrus - From the Shadows (CD)
Kode 9 - 9 Samurai
Kode 9 ft. Spaceape - Memories of the Future
The Others - Underworld
Loefah - Root/Goat Stare
Loefah - Diskoh Rekka
Loefah - Voodoo
Scarecrow - Taken
Scarecrow - Exorcist/Snakes and Ladders
Deepchord - HR01
Deepchord - Vantage Isle
Deechord - Coldest Season Part I (LP)
Deechord - Coldest Season Part II (LP)
Deechord - Coldest Season (CD)
Mala - Bury Da Bwoy (2 copies)
Mala - Left Leg Out
Murdo - Bring Murda
Casper - Cockney Violin
Dubstep Allstars Vol 3
Dubstep Allstars Vol 5
Kromestar - Too many to list, about 8 releases.
Skream - Skreamizm Vol 1
Skream - Skreamizm Vol 2
Skream - Skreamizm Vol 3
Tim Wright - Definately Wrong
The Tuss - Whatever that EP is called (of course!)
Emptyset - Acuphase EP
Trentmoller - Moan
About a dozen dubstep 12" whitelabels, not credited to
anyone, eg "I don't give a Dub",
The Congos - Fisherman Style (6 * 7"s)
NRON & Mik'd - Pull it Up
Ghislain Poirier - They Wanna Know
Little Dragon - Twice
Rhythm & Sound/Cornell Campbell - King in my empire
Rhythm & Sound/The Chosen Brothers - Making History

Only stopped because I ran out of characters, this list is
well under half of what I have actually bought.
Incidentally, I don't have the MP3s of 80%+ of these
releases anymore- I keep getting in to trouble at work for
the amount of MP3s on my machine. I only buy about 1 or 2%
of my records based on recommendation/reputation without
hearing them first these days. Too many disappointing
releases bought that way of late. Radio accounts for about
5% of what I buy. 90%+ is MP

+3!

Incidentally, I still haven't paid for any MP3s (aside from
the semi-legal AllofMP3.com). I just can't bring myself to
do it and it seems like a waste of money. I know people
reckon it's the future, but I'd rather pay 3* the price and
have a slab of vinyl in my hands. If it's CD only, I might
buy it on CD if it's really good/I want to support the
artist.

Bingobob's original statement is probably true. People who
download mp3's are the people who consume the most music,
therefore they're more likely to buy cd's. It probably has
more to do with age than anything else. It's a useless
statement.

Most of the record stores near me have closed over the past
few years. I don't think I could ever buy an mp3.

i recently changed my point of view towards cds recently
when i got an excellent cd player. since that i'm
rediscovering my cds collection & enjoy new details, various
stuff. cds seems pretty underated these days. of course
vinyls are the best (more warm, presence, whatever) but the
lps qualities can differs from one to another.
for exemple, some old lps i bought (second handed) are not
always perfect, it depends you need good wax or something,
also eps can be expensive (see the latest planet e).
