Anyone else live here? I'm a fresh import, present for
only a week, but looking forward to at least five more. The
weather consistently lifts my spirits. The beach is nearby
and beautiful. My only complaint is how spread out the city
is.

Happy to be on the west coast after all those years on the
east.

I barely know anyone down here! Is it time for a great XLT
meetup?!?!!

PS that photo took no effort, the beach is gorgeous.

sneakattack, what out for "the big one", ask Mr. IronLung,
he knows what that means. Where did you move from-

I have seen quite a few. I am not as into asian girls as I
used to be, however—bodies good but faces a tad too
flat, I like cheekbones. People are much nicer here than
out on the east coast, as well.

okay, I hope we'll all see the big one together.

I've been in pittsburgh the past three years, and before
that I was in manhattan three years. I drove across
the country to get here, it was pretty nice.

long drive !!
did you go through NE ?

Im guessing there is a lot more plastic in California than
on the east coast, a lot more skinnies (to skinny) than
where you are from also.

take more pics-

A friend was looking through a newspaper when he first
arrived, and said that it was plastered with cosmetic
surgery advertisements. I think I saw my first extremely
obvious boob job two days ago: a slight asian girl in a
tank-top with the tell-tale overly well defined
tops-of-boobs. oh well.

People are thinner it seems, yeah. I like thin girls,
though. I've been taking pictures, and will take more.
Slowly building up a webspace, though it is HIDDEN for now.

I'm actually using a wiki engine, creating a matusopedia of
sorts.

oh and, no, I didn't go near nebraska. I took a somewhat

putting a post on xlt to have fun waypoints, but my life got
crazy before the transit and it slipped my mind.

Holy shit! What were you up to over here!

Main question--where's a nice, dense area with lots of good,
cheap places to eat? that was a big part of new york city
for me.

Any similar areas with bars/clubs (bars with dancing/music
preferable to clubs)? I'm not much into that sort of thing
at all, but it's nice to break the ice with new people. (I
didn't drink for two years but used it to this end for the
past few months.)

Which beaches were your favorite? Any good hikes?

THANKS

UCSD

HAHAHA. I got my masters at UCSD, in their Visual Arts
program. It was very excellent.

Hillcrest has some really nice places to eat, as it is the
more "cultural" area of San Diego. (I'm sure you've heard
why). North Park is coming up fast and you should find some
good places there, as well as cool book shops. There's
cheap places on El Cajon, but becareful as things move east
county.

As for clubs, go downtown. There's massive amounts of
people there on the weekends, so be careful as it will
become a meat market by 11pm. Unless, of course, that's
something you are interested in.

Beaches... they're all great, but OB is really "towny" and
quite nice. They've been notorious for fighting off
Starbucks out of their neighborhood.

And last but not least, check out the Whistlestop. It's a
hip little bar in Golden Hills. There's always a DJ and on
the weekends it is hipster booty bounce central. On Tuesday
nights, its an event called Friends Chill... my friend Scott
DJs IDM and all kinds of downtempo shit, while the bar is
lit in candle light and people board games and Nintendo on
the big screen projector.

All of that sounds very nice, thanks for the advice. I'd
eat some rice, if only to construct a rhyme not thrice.

The bookshop tip especially appreciated. I'm a huge douche,
introverted and disdainful of most people. But I like
having friends, and desperately need a way to meet people.
I'll check out all the places you suggested. My single
friend from before who lives here has his apartment in
hillcrest, in fact, and I've been there; seems nice. I
don't know what you mean, but I do know it's the gay area.

Actually I've had guys hit on me each time I went to torrey
pines state beach.. what's up with that?

I'm definitely not a meat market person, but I won't meet
girls in the CS department, so any new place to look is
welcome.

If you got hit on at Torrey Pines, it's likely b/c you were
close to Blacks Beach, the nudist beach at San Diego.

Are you in Computer Science or CogSci? I took some classes
with Jim Holland on data visualization in the CogSci
program.

Hang out at CRCA on campus. There is some crazy shit going
on there. The art kids are very interesting too, so try to
catch a lot of shows there. There is always something going
on at the Visual Arts Faciility next to Sixth College.

You should drop me an email. My best friend is still out
there and he is very much an esoteric, reader, electronic
musician type and is also looking to hang out with cool
people. As a matter of fact, he may likely be up at Friends
Chill tonight at the Whistlestop.

It's a bummer I just left, we would have totally gotten
together. I used to ride the campus bus from the Hillcrest
UCSD hospital into school, and there was always this kid who
wore a Gridlock t-shirt. I never talked to him, but there
are some people there who are into electronic music. It's
not like it used to be, but there are still some excellent
people around. The Broken Beat network puts electronic
shows on often at Kadan and down in TJ.

I saw Jega, edIT, eight frozen modules, tom burbank, and a
shit load of people down there from time to time.

Oh, and Miller Puckette teaches at UCSD and runs CRCA. He's
pretty nuts and really awesome. As a matter of fact, he was
on my thesis committee. He's not really into IDM, but into
crazy electronic music obviously. (he created Max/MSP).

Speaking of ComputerScience, Ben Fry and Casey Reas, who
created Processing, often come to UCSD for talks. If you
need to work with someone outside of your department, you
should seriously consider meeting up with some of the
faculty at the visual arts program. It's quite progressive
there and you'll get a strong theoretical backbone.

Lev Manovich is in the VA department, he wrote Language of
New Media.
As is Amy Alexander, a live coder/performer. Seriously,
check those them out if your interested in situating
Computer Science into contemporary critical culture.

I'm jam packed with projects already, having ton lots of
research in my ugrad, but I definitely want to branch out;
it'll simply be hard the first year as I tie up loose ends,
find my footing, and get the bulk of my coursework out of
the way. I'll keep all that in mind; there'll definitely be
time for serious side projects while I'm here. And, as you
could imagine, I've always wanted to do a musically oriented
project.

just be normal, and what ever happens happens.

Could be fun! I'm sure there are others lurking within some
relatively small radius; somehow we need to coax them out of

LA must have more stuff—do you know if there are any

promising, start a thread and let's do better than the UK
