replacing it with a mac.

back to pc for music production?

Wait, what? Why would you go back to pc for music
production?

That's the reason I want to get a macbook pro in the first
place, a lot of the really good music software is made for
mac (Logic Pro, Digital Performer, etc.).

the laptops ive owned were an IBM and an HP and they both
were buggy as hell. no blame on viruses or spyware cause
they had limited access to the 'net, theyre just junky. the
HP had a malfunctioning firewire port so i couldnt use my
audio interface, so i had to piggyback this PCMCIA-E thing
to plug it in which required power on its own, and that shit
hardly worked. it seems like you hear less people with macs
complaning about basic functions of the computer...

ive had my macbook for a little under a year now and i love
it. i have not had any software problems at all save for a
few file permissions which got fucked up by windows
so it wasnt even a mac problem.

also, their apple care tech support rules. i spilled half a
pint of beer directly into my laptop which fried nearly
everything, and, granted it did cost me 1200 to fix a 1900
computer, but i essentially have a brand new computer which
is still completely under warranty. another friend recently
had the same thing happen and she had hers repaired for no
cost at all!

plus, with boot camp, now you dont have to abandon your
windows software and can gradually move from one platform to
the other.

goddamn, i sound like an advert - where's my hipster bag and
chunky unattractive peecee counterpart?

The only thing that still annoys me about making music on
macs rather than PC is the fact that older software isn't
compatible - it needs to be a universal binary version for
the intel chip.

Its not a big deal if you use 'proper' instruments and fx -
but I have (had) a handful of old freeware bits that I
really love, a couple of lofi synths and filters, and knew
my way around them blindfolded. I don't imagine many would
miss them though, there's already an increasing amount of
intel compatible freeware bits available.

But it also means that my legit version of cubase 2.0 won't
work with the mac OS. And the fact that only new versions of
sequencers will run means that there are less options for
using pirated software as the new, compatible stuff
generally hasn't been cracked, or has v effective security -
but obviously this shouldn't be a prob if you're not being
naughty.

Apart from these compatibility issues (which probably wont
be an issue for most people) there's nothing to fault macs
for, production wise. I also can't imagine using a PC live
anymore - using a mac totally makes you realise how
unreliable PCs are.

the only thing that holds me on pc's is fruity loops. yeah i
know this might be lame but after 5 years with this prog it
allows me to do just everything and it has just so much
different little options that have great potential when
used.

i used to agree with you.

when i first switched, i was booting back to windows just to
use flstudio (and my reliably cracked version of ableton).

after 9 months, my laptop no longer even has a windows
partition.

Cygnus, the macbook pros are well worth the money...you can
dual-boot into Windoze, or you can run it simultanously with
parallels...

Persoanlly I still use Win for Sonar 6...(after a 70$ 1gb
mem upgrade; 2gb total) on top of the osx for maximum
compatibility for producing at friend's studios...

I now use my old boxes to build Unix-based networks only for
my job...I've never looked back to installing Windowze as a
standalone OS...all VM on parallels...

My Lenovo (formely IBM) thinkpad T60 is built like a tank
and is a brilliant laptop. I don't really use it for music,
other than multitrack recording and tweaking stuff in
cooledit pro, but I would recommend the T60. It's designed
for business people on the move, so it is designed to be
very durable. I find the styling very low key, business-like
and sexy - no silly curvy edges and glowing apple logos,
etc.

My friend spend a lot more on a high performance apple
powerbook and spilt milk on the keys after a couple of
months - had to send it back to apple for repair.

If I pour liquids on my thinkpad, they just drain through
the keys and out of two holes at the bottom. When I use
other laptops they feel so fragile and cheap.

That is so cool. A laptop with a sewage system. Do they
still make them with a mouse nipple in the center of the
keyboard? I'd prefer a touchpad.

They have both nipple and touchpad! I prefer nipple, but my
mate used the touchpad exclusively today and didn't complain
about it.
fav+ feature of thinkpad is its predictive drop system.
Unlike others which detect they're falling to halt the disk
and make it safe, this one detects things which can cause a
fall. If it suddenly detects it is tilting it will think
"hang on..I'm about to fall" and protect the disk.
If you wobble it, it figures out there is repetative motion
and eases off on the sensitivity.

If only they would actually make them like in this
video.

Predictive drop A++.

K, I'm sold. My next lappy will be one of those evil black
business machines. Does it close its lid if it detects
something sharp coming at the screen?

i moved to mac last year after a life time of bagging the
shit out of macs and loving how in control of PC's you can
be (reg edit etc..) but basicly if I ever have to use a
piece of shit PC again it will be too soon.

Switch to mac best idea ever.

i got a new computer a few weeks ago, it is a mac pro....i
decided against a laptop because i am super hard on things
and i spill on them and drop them and dent them all the
time. this way i have to leave it at home. and i prefer to
handwrite notes and have no occasion for a nice computer
outside of my home (no "gigs" here)

and the computer is super fast and waaaay to heavy to move
out from under my desk (hard to spill on under there)

The cord for my laptop is getting busted. Every two minutes
or so my screen starts flashing and I have to readjust it.
The cord. Also, there are crumbs beneath my keys. Some
letters make crunching sounds while others don't work at
all. Besides that, my laptop's great. Of course it does,
it's a Dell.
