I think the lot of them are lousy political hacks who care
more about the power than the issues.

The exceptions to this are Ralph Nader and Ron Paul, neither
of whom stand a chance to get elected Prez.

They lie too, although slightly less
spectacularly/insultingly (as in, insulting to the
electorate's collective intellect). I actually believe the
third party (Lib Dems) to be the most honest (by that I of
course mean that they "lie less frequently", not that
they're actually 'honest'), however, I base my voting on
policy alone.

It's good that you base your voting on policy alone.. so do
I, which is why I basically really vote blank (I'm no
home-sitter; I do vote, but ideally, I'd vote blank
because I don't agree with any of the parties enough to vote
for them). However, lately, the most populist right-wing
liberalist party has been gaining votes, so this year I vote
against them, meaning I voted for the least evil
party on the other side.

However, what do you count as a lie?

Well, we have to end apartheid for one. And slow
down the nuclear arms race, stop terrorism and world
hunger. But we can't ignore our social needs. either We
have to stop people from abusing the welfare system. We
have to provide food and shelter for the homeless and
oppose racial discrimination and promote civil rights while

also promoting equal rights for women but change the
abortion laws to protect the right to life yet still
somehow maintain women's freedom of choice.
We also have to control the influx of illegal
immigrants. We have to encourage a return to traditional
moral values and curb graphic sex and violence on TV, in
movies, in pop music, everywhere. Most importantly we have
to promote general social concern and less materialism in
young people.

lol

I won't get into the details because a certain obi here gets
very touchy when people engage in anti-Vaterland rants, but
generally the coutry is ruled by a bunch of altar-boys who
used to get pushed around too much 40/30/20 years ago and
now are taking their revange on anybody who dares to be
slightly more intelligent or simply more happy with life
than they are.

sklep indeed

IMO, One of the worst sort of lies are making something the
backbone of your campaign, then not doing it when you get to
power, even though the cost to change it would be
negligible, or even save money. I mean this in terms of
changing laws, scrapping of the proposed/existing systems
(ID cards, for example). Not some nearly-impossible to
quantify claim such as, "we'll reduce waiting lists by 2
months in the health service." promise that they fall short
on (IE there is an improvement, but not as much as they
claimed, but in any event, you can measure it a dozen
different ways and get a dozen different answers).

The absolute worst is once you're in power, telling the
populace something you know to be untrue. All the others can
be "justified" (not that it makes it right, but it's more
understandable why they do it) as external factors
(recession, increasing costs of materials, strikes, etc.)
make something you promised impossible. An example in recent
history would be the war in Iraq. Irrespective of whether or
not you think we should have gone to war anyway, the fact
that Blair lied about the reason was completely unacceptable
IMO. I was genuinely surprised that there wasn't rioting
and that more people were not pissed off about this than
they were about the war. Going to war only pisses off the
anti-war camp. Lying about going to war (should) piss off
everyone.

I treat vauge "promises" like "we'll be tough on crime" that
don't really stipulate anything as irrelevant and comparable
to the legal entity "salesman's puff", IE the same as brand
x washing powder saying "Best formula ever!" on the
packaging. Sadly, most people's grasp of policy (if they
have any at all) is a collection of these sort of vague
statements, eg "labour is for worker's rights", "the
conservatives look out for businesses interests", rather
than any real policy. Consequently, it's questionable if you
can technically really lie to most of the electorate...
