after such a long time i still think that this is the
greatest autechre album ever. it's so full, dirty, organic
and complete. it's a rhytm masterpiece. i am still as a
music producer by what they do with the beat in xylin room.

great great album, but i still think they did it better on
confield (although the definition of it is wholly subject,
as the two albums were, according to sean and rob, composed
completely differently).

i feel in the mood for some gilespie afterwards i think

oh also, after listening to draft for hours on end on
headphones, i can't stand to listen to it on normal speakers
- for some reason all the sounds completely lose their depth
when not pressed directly against my ears.

you know confield is still a big question mark for me - i
have probbly never listened to the whole thing at once.
dunno why yet. one thing for sure - it doesn't seem so
complete to me like draft. especially pen expers cuts into
that flow.

oh man pen expers is like the most perfect track on that
album!

prolly the best ae track ever actually imo. funny.

confield is more like wandering through a strange
extraterrestrial landscape. its still the most alien thing i
have ever heard.

draft makes it seem like the humans have come back.

headset is the best for active autechre music listening. and
please no mp3 comressed autechres. it completely destorys
the autechre.

i mainly listen to draft on headphones, and loud. after all
these years i guess i could only wish for more, the songs
seem shorter now cause you know what's going to happen

mp3 kills bass - there is no autechre with less bass.

i for myself enjoy listening stuff like that on my logitech
2.1 system. they are very accurate when it comes to stereo
panning. and the sub growls nicely.

hed: i love pen expers of course - it's a wonderful track
and the idea with the sidechain comp on the melody is just
pure bliss - but it somehow doesn't fit the rest of the
album imho.

i remember listening to the rip of the demo cassette a few
weeks before the actual release which was somehow slowed
down a bit and the tracks where longer.

also the tape hiss added so much.

haha, yeah i still have the tape rip mp3's. good stuff. my
reniform puls is cut off though, its only 30% of the song

the best part of draft 7.30 to me of course is the amazing
drum sequencing on reniform puls which blows my mind. i dont
know what to make of it anytime i listen to it, its just
ridiculous. its just sick.

for me the most interesting track production wise is xylin
room. i checked it yesterday putting a simple hihat track on
top of it - the whole track holds a steady 132 bpm or
something like that. there is no time shifting at all going
on. fucking hell. it's either a few months on making it by
hand or some sequencing trickery i have no idea about.

mp3 kills bass? are you sure you aren't using a broken
encoder?

Draft is my favorite AE album. I recently picked up the
vinyl version mainly because of the beautiful artwork
included and i was actually kind of disappointed by the
drastically different mastering it had from the CD version.
A lot more of the layers are much more audible than before
but at the same time it sounds like it has way too much
dynamic range and not as much compression as the CD. I think
i like that very tight overly compressed sound of Draft, the
vinyl just didnt do it for me.

It'd be funny if they made the stuttery wonderment in xylin
room with a chain of buffer override vst plugins. Har.

cs2x, great avatar i loved that game
sadist, i believe mp3 compression can fuck with a lot of
characteristics of music. but mp3 compression with the right
settings can be completely audibly transparent on bass or
pretty much any other aspect of the music. I wasn't sure if
you were saying that mp3 definitively always fucks with the
audible bass content, if you were its just factually
incorrect

funny enough i lately discovered it's one of the albums i
play most often....there is indeed something perfect about
it. less rigid than Confield and more precisely structured
than Untilted. Which makes the waiting for their next full
album more exciting.

im in agreement with the more evolved than confield vibe, in
some ways i feel like Untilted is like a pre-confield. An
album they might have released had they done something using
some of the Fm synth Techniques from LP5/EP7 and some of the
weirder glitchy tripletly sequencing from confield/draft

offline jackeroffer from Aruba on 2007-09-08 22:04 [#02118447]

i think thats also why i dont like untilted so much, the
order of the 3 albums imo should be reversed , can someone
go back in time and make this so?

draft went deeper
untilted went ...

careful how literally you interpret it

i like draft7.30. i like confield.
though i never understood why people compaire them. or say
draft7.30 is a less good version of confield or whatever.
besides a few comparisions and such, they're just totally
different. both amazing.

offline sadist from the dark side of the moon on 2007-09-09 03:16 [#02118473]

untilted is a techno/dance album compared to draft and
confield. in the positive meaning. imo they showed on it
that they have a sense of humour. aphex always hated ae for
being so serious and dark all the time, that they never even
tried to make something happy and upbeat.

now listen to sublimit, to the 4th minute - fuckin disco. or
the "break" sample in pro radii - come on it rocks everyone
- just look how people wait for it when played live but you
have to admit that looking at autechre this might be
considered cheesy :>

apparently they used a max msp patch which was stolen from

Some professor or something accused them of stealing his
patch on the Max forums. Sean or Rob (I forget which)
responded in a lot more civil manner than I would. I think
the conclusion was that they were inspired by the professor
but didn't steal.
