Multiplayer Civilization type game?

When I was a youth, I used to love playing strategy type
games like Civilization and the Settlers..... it's years ago
now, though, and I haven't actually played a computer game
in a long time. I've completely fallen out of the loop....

I'd like to get hold of a Civilization/Settlers type game,
but one which has a multiplayer mode that you can play over
an internet connection, and one that it's pretty easy to
find other people to play the multiplayer game with.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Freeciv is, in fact, exactly what you're
looking for: Multiplayer Civilization.

How about simply getting Civilization IV? It has multiplayer
mode.
