What is recommended for scratching and juggling beats, direct drive or belt drive? I'm thinking it's direct but want to double check before I go wasting money.

Direct drive.
Technics 1210, bitch!
Then you can literally juggle beats.

direct drive must be - maybe you wouldn't kill the motor on a belt drive one but the platter would stop imediately when you just touch it.
although the 1210 technics is considered the best turntable out there - when you really want to scratch and do beat juggling i would recommend some other gear. the 1210 sounds great and doesn't change the pitch but the motor is a bit weak for some scratching moves.

Some of the higher range Stantons are great for scratching.

How can the motor be weak for scratches? Those quartz-lock-dot-things on the side haven't been affected even once unless I've applied force directly to the platter...

I was just about to say that.
P.S. I use 1210s and they are ideal for scratching. I would recommend Shure M447 cartridges for scratching, although I myself use the M44G, which is not quite as good for scratching, but has better sound and can track even the most warped vinyl at 1.5g!
Seriously, I think you need to do a lot more research on the subject, because it is can be a very expensive hobby.

I use butter rugs, but they wouldn't stop with normal scratching in any case.. you'd have to use quite a bit of force (relative to what I consider normal scratch force).

probably - i tried a few times to make this move where you have a pair of the same vinyl and you make a loop out of them. i may have been to stressed doing it so i might have actually pressed to hard.

What he said. I'd also recommend trying not only the 1210s, but also the Stanton STR8150 and the Vestax PDX2000 (any version of it). Different people prefer different turntables and any one of those 3 can be used for world class turntabilism.
As to carts, M447s are superb, sure they're not the best for listening to music, but I honestly cannot remember a time they have skipped when I've been scratching, although I'm sure they must have done.
As dave_g says, I'd make sure you really want to do it, then buy the best. If you're just a dilettante and want to "have a go" at it, then bore of it after 2 months, you'll find it's a big waste of money.
On an unrelated note, did you get that Honda in the end?

Supposed to wear out quite quickly and also supposed to wear out your records more quickly than M447s. What is your experience of this?
I do concede they sound nicer than M447s for listening though.

It all depends on if you want to scratch or listen. Personally, I would say the M447 are good for pure scratching and vinyl abuse, but M44G are better for most regular scratching and also beat DJing. They can track at 0.75g which is insane - some audiophile carts track at 7+g, which will eat your vinyl in no time!
If you are into super dooper hifi or club DJing, then get something else. I can't really recomment anything in this department.
Checking out as many tables as possible is definately worth doing too, but the 3 suggested are generally the top 3. Maybe try the numark TTX1 (i think that's the name). They're supposed to be good, but more gimmicky than the PDX and stantons combined!
I think the 1200/1210 is the best choice and proably depreciates in value much slower than some others.
Have a read of this article to see why it is probably the best hi fi table too.

A couple of years back at DMC I asked Cutmaster Swift what he was using as I didn't recognise them and he showed me them, sure enough M44Gs.
For more normal "club" djing, I quite like Stanton 505s. They obviously can't compete with a the M447s for tracking, but the sound quality and longevity are far better than the price would suggest.
That's an interesting article on the 1210. I have never really tried one in a hi-fi situation, but the nearest I came to one, it didn't sound great. To be fair though, that was an old and battered deck (a victim of its own indestructability ;-) ). Perhaps I should have another listen with a brand new one.

I think you should. The technics have well designed electronic and precision mechanical parts. Things like the Rega Planar seem to base all their audiophile properties on pseudo-science, like glass platters, wooden base and rubber bands and gullible customers!
Just compare the following two images and you can see the high quality engineering. No contest:
Rega - Technics
Just look at the tonearm assemblies - precision gimball verses, erm... glued to a block of wood!

I haven't noticed much of either to be honest. I may have changed the stylus a bit often, but I'm picky and I also use the turntables a lot (several albums per day). I think I've changed it once per year.
I've been thinking of getting a separate listening cartridge, though.. they're so easy to switch anyway...

Personally I prefer the styling of the technics. Being an engineer, the beauty comes from its functional design. The thing you linked seems a bit too "style over substance" looks wise at least (it is also way too big).
It weighs in 350kg, the technics are about 12kg, so it's about 29 times heavier. I dread to think about the price...
It looks like you're comparing something totally out of the league of the technics. I don't entirely think it's a fair comparason.

seriously if someone thinks technics iis the beauty of funcionality and design....hands down competition winner.
the price of decent debut model from pro-ject is less than technics, who actually prices you for nothing. bad quality tonearm, typical cheap cartridge, a bulb ? jesus.
are we talking turntables or toys here ?
where to start
its not as expensive as people think. theres a difference between hi fi and hi end.usually counted in zeros.seriously, pro-jest is where it should start.

Haha, I wasn't comparing, I was just saying it was a cool turntable.. even though it, design wise, looks like kitsch shit.
They're known for being of good quality, though, and their master reference turntable is supposedly amazing (8cm platter, belt drive, motor in a separate lead casing, the belt only touches the platter on three minimal points and those weird huge "free float" tone arms).. you'd need a heavy set-up for it to work properly, though.
In any case, if you want better listening quality, it should always be belt drive, but if you're getting direct drive, I don't doubt the technics can hold their own against any of the other producers out there.
