Sequencer woes

Slightly different from nanotech's thread.

I'm trying to get some inspiration and information about
DAWs at the moment, I've been in limbo a bit since I bought
my macbook about a year ago, flitting between different
options.

I've yet to come up with a solution. I used a pirate version
of ableton 5.0 (until the copy protection got all clever and
crippled itself permanently, it seems), which was great but
the linear sequencing was a little limited I found. Are
there any 6.0 users who could comment on improvements?

Ironically the opposite is the case with cubase - I have a
legit version of SL2 (and have played with SX3) and have
worked with it a lot but find that I crave the elasticity
and intuitiveness of ableton along with the ease and detail
of the cubase linear sequencing thing. Are there any cubase
4 users here who could again give their 2 cents as to its
new functions?

I'm looking to take advantage of an educational discount on
a new bit of software as cracked stuff seems like a no-go
(on macs especially). Pissed off that the upgrade cost from
any version of SL to Cubase 4 is the same as educational
price for a full, non-update Cubase 4. And all that shit
with the USB dongle is a load of shit too - I dislike
pirated stuff but its attractions aren't just financial,
bizarrely.

Mac version of Reaper is coming soon. It's great on Windows.
Affordable too.

Preview build, probably woefully incomplete and unstable:
