since this is an international board someone who speaks japenese might be available.
my question's rather simple, though. is it true that there's no term for "I" in japanese and that u can only say "we" in that language as a drunk guy in a pub has told me yesterday? i can't be arsed to google.
this lack of an "I" in that language then is also used to explain the lack of metaphysics in east asia. while for instance the state religion in china was confucianism for a few thousand years, a teaching that tells u to not bother about gods and concentrate on the human realm europe's history is full of philosophical and religious metaphysical theories that had been accepted widely. (now china isnt japan so there's no direct connection, but a less close connection nevertheless possibly). well, i dont know about that. but it'd be interested in the I/we thing.

well, that sorta defeats the claim that there's no word for "I" in japanese.

well, i had read that the notion of "the individual" is "underdeveloped" in japanese language. that was the reason that guy told me there'd be no "I" in japanese. well, obviously this is false. but if u are aware of subtelties in japanese that indeed point out that the japanese have a weaker concept of "the individual", which is also rooted in their language, it'd be interesting to hear.

As far as I know, when someone refers to themselves, they use their own name or those words nanotech listed. This doesn't necessarily imply anything for their perception of self; sometimes language expresses more than what can be translated.
