I tried to get into Beck, but listening to samples I thought
it was all mediocre. Anyone give me somewhere to start? (I'm
after more electronic stuff unless he's done some really
good indie/alternative work)

for an intro to beck, definitely check out odelay! nothing
he's done before or since then has come close to matching
that album's perfection. an iconic album of the 90's.

oh, and timebomb, like most of his recent output, is
dissapointing at best.

of course, dissapointing would ensue that i had good
expectations for it, which i didn't.

Beck hasn't released any truly electronic music as far as i
know. but he has made several great
"indie/alternative" albums in plenty of different styles...

• Odelay is his most well-known album and it's the
one which got me into his music — probably the best one to
start with.
• Mutations is great as well, more moody.
• Mellow Gold might be my favourite; it's quirky,
ironic, catchy, sometimes lo-fi and pretty unique.
• Midnite Vultures is downright funky, completely
different from any other album he's made and quite brilliant
too.
• One Foot In The Grave is entirely acoustic
folk-rock. short but with some brilliant tracks as well.
• Sea Change is really mellow and melancholic, i
like it but some people found it deceiving.
• Guero and The Information are the least
good of the bunch, though they do have their highlights.

i give it a six.

i would give it a 5 for being completely just... pedantic,
but the fact that the synth and hook are somewhat catchy
gives it an extra point, even if its just repeating for
literally the entire song (seriously, there's one like 2 bar
breakdown, but for the rest of the song its *beep*beep*beep*
all the way thru).

Timebomb is mediocre. it just sounds like a
Guero b-side to me. : /

midnight vultures first release?

Funky as fuck! Too funky for MV even!

music tech and studio sound engineering.

Mellow Gold
Odelay
One Foot In The Grave
Mutations
Sea Change
The Info
Guero
----

That's my order. Really hard list to make... the only thing
that i'm pretty certain about is which album is his worst.
Midnight Vultures. I consider that one an accident

i hate timebomb. i heard live mp3s of it awhile and thought
it was a really bland song, and the studio version is just,
crappy and pointless. bleh.
as for good beck. odelay, mellow gold, seachange, midnite
vultures have all had their fare share of play in my life.
his endless supply of acoustic songs is the other side of
beck which i love him for.
