I mean, why?
Just... why?

You can tell on "Cactus" on Surfer Rosa, but still!

generally it's to present older music the way it was meant
to be heard. think of movie remasters where all the dirt and
scratches are removed from the images.

listen to one of the craptacular beatles cd releases and
you'll hear why cds sometimes need to be remastered.

Right, but copies are only as good as source / method of
master.
IMHO most times the general population can't really tell
"Oh my god, did you hear the cymbal panned rear left?!! And
that vocal midcenter?!"
Monetarily, of course, it makes sense.
Like you stated, maybe on a Beatles or Hendrix track, but
otherwise... neh.

A source of income for record companies struggling with
dropping record sales. MP3 kills music etc.

the sonic youth remasters sound pretty good to me.

The Beatles remasters are going to be revelatory. The stereo
on the CD masters make my brain itch. But none of the vinyl
or mono mixes really cut it either.

but they're basically never going to be released, right?

I think most albums get remastered just because they need to
be reissued, but they don't want to just rerelease the same
thing, they want a new (heavily compressed, undynamic and
over loud) version.

I like Monolake's remastered stuff. That guy is all about
deep well produced sounds and i can see why he would do such
a thing.

all of CAN's remastered stuff blows the old stuff out of the
water, the older version of Future Days, you cant even hear
the album unless the volume it turned up to max, now the
volume and sound are great, its gives me a tuss.

Skink is right. got all of em up through Pornography. i
wasnt expecting pornography to sound good for obvious
reasons but it really is great.
and mrgypsum is right. Tago Mago sounds amazing.

the talking heads ones are great too. and the Fennesz one. i
could keep going...Marquee Moon...

a lot of remasters sound fucking fantastic compared to the
old versions, that's why. the raw power remaster is a
travesty, though.

Because some old CD's and CD's of stuff from the 60's, which
came out in the 80's sound all muddy and shite. A bit like
the old 'Rolling Stones' catalogue.

I guess your point is why remaster stuff, which came out 10
years before. In truth, that's still pretty pointless,
however on some stuff you can really tell the difference.
You mentioned the Pixies album.
