i make loads of music and when people listen to it they
tend to give me the thumbs up or say its dope but i always
think it is terrible when i really get down and listen to
what ive made and, typically im embarassed of the music
that i let people listen to. i cringe

Hey bro I totally understand what you're saying. Good
friends I find aren't good critics. What I've done in the
past is to play my songs when I have a few people over
drinking and shit. If it sucks they will tell you (usually
something like "what the fuck is this crap?"), but if it's
killer you can tell by their mood. Now I wouldn't recommend
telling them either way (unless you don't plan on doing this
again). I also know that you are your own worst critic so
maybe your songs are truely dope.

Don't tell them it's you, say you downloaded it from a
netlabel or something.

I find tracks I've done that I really like, other people
tend to not be so bothered about, whereas ones I think are
so-so, or even quite poor, other people enthuse about. I was
genuinely surprised when I was DJing and someone asked
"What's this track, it's wicked!" when it was a track I'd
made, that I thought was quite fun and catchy, but by no
means my best work.

It definately seems to be that way for me as well. I do find
that playing my stuff out at a gig makes me like it about
ten times as much!
