i don't see how people like the drummer, the drumming sounds
completely rubbish and wanky to me at many points instead of
driving the song with the steady groove of the original.

I think you're forgetting that this is a cover by a band,
not a remix made in a sequencer. Whether or not you think it
works for the song, I think it's fair to say that the
drumming is at least technically proficient.

Dillinger Escape Plan, and yeah, they're highly overrated.

Dillinger Escape Plan has carved quite a name for themselves
on Relapse Records, although the cover of CTD was terrible,
even though most boardmembers at the time liked it.

i'd have to agree about the drumming. normally you'd expect
a human beat to flow more than a sequenced beat, but that's
not the case here.

would be nice to hear a better quality recording of this
performance though.

offline obara from Utrecht on 2007-08-29 08:12 [#02115651]

well, yeah perhaps the drumming would sound more attractive
if put from some effects, if it sounded a bit closer to the
original, but then it could sound too artificial. i like the
version a lot the way it is, the drummer's skills can be
heard in all their glory

Why would you expect a single human drummer to be able to
drum MORE smoothly than richard's sequencing? He's playing
live music, do you guys understand this concept?

he can't hold a tight enough groove and seems to try to hit
as many drums&cymbals as possible, as hard as possible.

technical proficiency is one thing, but it doesn't sound too
good when it's wild and untempered like that.

he's got the moves but no feel. miles davis would probably
say that he's too white.

Granted, there are a few spots in the cover that don't match
up that well with the drum-programming of the original, but
overall I think it's a damn-good rendition, and I think he's
got a pretty good feel for the beats in the song,
considering it took Alarm will Sound four drummers
simultaneously to even get anywhere near playing the drums
from that song. I don't think this kid did a better job than
afx or alarm will sound's drummers, I just think he did
extremely well for playing it by himself.

"he's got the moves but no feel." well, for me he's got it
all plus the timing. first of all, he has the sense of
rhythm, without which this whole cover version would sound
shit
