I stopped skating a couple of years ago. but now that I've started working full time I needed something to take a break from work. so I bought a new board and the whole "shabang". feels great. I'm getting the hang of my kickflip and varial kickflip again. pop shuvit is also coming along nicely. anyone else that skateboards? |

I longboard to and from work around Bristol, im not really into tricks and the like, just bombing and carving. It keeps me sane and somewhat fit.. Raz0rBlade_uk: The whole stopping issue gets easier with practise and a decent pair of skateshoes. |

I used to skateboard when I was younger- I was never into tricks, just getting from a->b by board. I was quite into rollerblading for a bit and the unveiling of a really good (not to mention free) skatepark on my doorstep has made me consider getting back into it. I was never great at tricks mind and I don't much fancy being shown up by a bunch of 14 year olds. :) |

haha, ive just started using a skateboard that was left at my house for transportation. i have no bike and my car is currently out of commission, so its my next best choice short of begging friends for rides. im thinking i probably shouldnt be tho, ive almost gotten hit by cars on a couple occasions as i have yet to regain my bearings on the thing. im thinking about investing in a long board tho, if youre doing transport mainly i hear thats the way to go. |

funny that i just went out for a roll yesterday with a few friends who still skate in brissle from dubai. could never do fuck all just loved bombing and just try dropping off stupid shit. good fun. bit tired though. |

I got into skating after i started surfing and borrowed a mates longboard oneday, and i was totally hooked. I guess the transition from surf > longboard naturally means im going to focus on getting nice lines when carving rather than kickflips, for example (i dont know very much of the terminology). The feeling of conquering a steep hill at close to 30mph cannot be beaten.. For anyone looking to buy a longboard, i'd recommend Lush longboards. I currently use a Mako and cannot fault it, i'm tempted to get the smaller Tula someday soon when i can justify the expense. :D |

Yep, never quit since I was in the 5th grade, just moments of "down time". What kind of setup to you have. I have a Chris Haslam deck, some almost wheels and Indi trucks. Have you seen the Almost video Round III, amazing. Element has a new one out. Birdhouse will release "the beginning" soon. Actually a few weeks ago, they tore down a crappy, deteriorating park here, put a 15 foot fence (to keep the bmx'ers out) and will put in some new structures :) skate or die. |

well I have a enjoi skateboarding deck and venture trucks. I used to have Orion trucks but I lost them when I moved out of my previous house. I didn't want to spend allot of money just yet. but when I get really heavy into it again. I'll buy some detructo trucks or something. it's been to long so I'm not sure anymore what the good brands are. |

My question is, How many years was skateboarding popular back in the 1980s? I'm sure it's different for different areas, but specifically the West-Coast. The reason I ask is because skateboarding has been popular for well over 5 years I'd say and I don't see it going on the back burner anytime soon. |

yeah its kind of weird for me still i didnt mind the dreads going cause it was so fucking hot but with out the facial hair i looked like i did in 8th grade (which is 13/14 cause i think you guys have a different school system) got carded for the first time in years so i guess thats cool |

isnieZot : there are no best brands as far as im concerned, get a deck, wheels, trucks, sticker, and skate. have fun. crash, yell fuck real loud, try again tomorrow bogala : skatboarding is incredibly hard and technical at times, you try to do a simple ollie, you'll fall on your ass the first month. tony hawk makes it look easy. revpersona : skateboarding kinda more or less died in early 1990's, very slow, almost dead, like idm :) then well, 1999 skateboarding was hugely popular again, and im not even east/west coast. No it wont fade away anytime soon, its a great expression and outlook. roygbivcore : can i have your dreadlocks, ill sew them into my short 1/4" hair, thanks, love,recycle |

Watch Skateboarding: Holly mother of god. Jesus, I just got the email, and watched Part 2, the last 5-10 minutes featuring Chris Haslam (long hair/long beard) are absolutely unbelievable !!!!! Some of the stunts he pulls off, others cant even think about them, none the less doing them, my god. And remind you, a lot of those parts the skaters are doing them Switch (opposite than their regular ridding stance) Jesus, im watchin Part 2 again. |

That Mako looks nice. I've never used a longboard (and was never very good on 'normal' skateboards anyway). Is stopping a longboard any different? Can you still ollie them and if so, is it any harder/different? |

Longboard are typically for "crussin'". Yes, you can ollie them a tad off the ground, but thats not what they are made for, crussin' the long sidewalks by the beach in California. Its easy to pop a 29" board, but a 34"+with no real concave is challanging, but far from impossible. You could hop small pebbles. |

I was just thinking for getting up onto kerbs where there is no dip, not jumping over a mate lying on the floor or anything like that. I'll have to measure the height of the lockers down my gym as it's all downhill from my house and I could see myself longboarding down the hill to get there quicker in the morning, provided I could put it in the locker. :) |

You would be best to stop&carry at kerbs, you could possibly do some type of roll-up-onto, but it would destroy the trucks and graphics, and afterall the purpose of the long board is to more or less show it off, oh and use it as transportation. You wont be doing 13 stair crooked grinds, 180 revert out any time soon :) |

Yeah, my old board had these plastic strips underneath (presumably to grind on) and I used to just wheelie the front over the kerb, smash those onto it, then tip my weight forwards, so the back would rise up over the kerb. When I pulled it off, it worked well. When I cocked it up, the board would stay stuck on the kerb and I'd go flying forwards off the board. Do you reckon I could attach some of these to the underside of the longboard, to allow me to do the same trick? Is the "stamping on the back of the board, then grabbing the front as it pops up" trick (no idea what the proper name is for this) for picking the board up still doable with longboards? BTW Thad, when you come to stay, you are going to bring your board and I will take you the two local skate park to show me some tricks and in return I will do you another acid track, only this time a hardware only one. :D Leonid, you reckon the Lush Kuni is adequate for a n00b like me, or will I outgrow it in 2 weeks and be better of buying a good one from the off? |

You could put rails on a longboard, never heard/seen it done though. The trick you mentioned, I think is just an ollie nosegrab, possible w/practice, I suppose. Even if your not a diehard skater, watch the Globe Part 2 video I linked above :) "Purple Pants" |

I did watch the video. There's a trick Haslam does on the flat in that where he sort of nearly stops then waves the board about his foot that I've not seen before. The trick I was talking about wasn't really an ollie- there was always one part of the board touching the ground. More sort a wheelie, followed by a stoppie (whatever that's called on skateboards) in quick succession. Leonid, what's the convention when going down hills, do you go on the road, or the pavement generally? I'm just thinking the hill I live on, the down hill has right of way and there is loads of run off at the bottom, so I reckon you'd actually be much safer on the road (sticking to the left like a cyclist). Whereas if you went down the pavement, you'd potentially T-bone cars at each of the side streets crossing the main road. I know from bitter experience that "right of way" is cold comfort when some myopic pensioner pulls out in front of you, but at least it makes the insurance claims simple. ;) |

I usually take to the roads if its not too busy, antagonising drivers with kerb to kerb carving is fun, but you are quite vulnerable. I would recommend getting some gloves for when you fall off, they also leave no fingerprints when your T-boning into cars *joke* The Kuni looks pretty decent, you cant go wrong with any of them really. For another £20 the Makonga could be a better investment as you'll progress in no time (they both have kicktails too!) Let me know how you get on.. im always up for a skate :) |
