When you factor in how long they have been on sale for, the
wii is in the lead.

To be frank, I'm surprised the PS3 has sold that many; I'm
quite into gaming, but only 2 mates have PS3s, whereas loads
have wiis/360s. Perhaps it's not so horrifically priced in
the USA?

I don't think the Wii could actually be counted as competing
against the other two.. it has its own weird market, and
buying one doesn't seem to affect people getting one of the
others or not: Those who buy Wiis are either people who
wouldn't buy the other consoles anyway, but who have the
weird idea that the Wii would be a great thing to bring out
at parties (I've been to parties with a Wii, and people
generally just turn it off because they get bored with the
games), or they buy one of the other consoles even though
they have a Wii.

When it comes to the two others, I think that the 360,
sadly, will win in sales figures, but that's mostly because
Microsoft somehow convinced gamers that taking your time to
actually finish the console so that it works when you
release it is a bad thing. They also just bribed Dreamworks
and Paramount to go HD-DVD exclusive (allegedly $50 millions
for Paramount and $100 millions for Dreamworks; figures
aren't exact, but they have paid something, and I
guess it is a lot). This'll probably boost 360 sales
because, strangely enough, people seem to think that the 360
actually is able to play HD-DVDs from the box, unaware that
they have to buy another box for it to work.

On the other side, I don't understand why Sony didn't design
the ps3 like a stereo component, 'cause that's what they're
slowly building it to be.. Using it as a media receiver (you
can set your pc to host files which can be played back on
the tv via network/ps3, and yes, any files will play back
over a media server, not just the internally supported
files; we've done it). They're also releasing a digital
tuner, making the ps3 capable of doing that thing where you
record one show while watching another on the tv. If you
forgot to set it to record before you left, but you have
your psp and an internet connection, you can connect to it
via the internet and control it and even watch the programs
on your psp if you for some reason should want to do that...

All these things, plus already being a capable blu-ray
player, and the other expected features (the psp as a
rear-view mirror in car-games?) could lead to the ps3
slowly building up, eventually catching up to the 360, but I
doubt it. Hopefully, though, they won't get too large of a
minus, so that they can keep on adding stuff and have people
develop those games that are the only ones worth playing
(MGS4, Final Fantasy XIII, Silent Hill 5).

It's a console. The other 2 are consoles too.
Same market. Different approach.

Wii wins.
360 comes in a close second.
PS3 limps in.

Of course, if we then add in hand held gaming then the DS
and PSP trounce the lot.

Sony have seemingly handled things quite poorly so
far...but...I have a feeling they are biding their time at
the moment and when they feel the time is right they will do
a huge marketing push and drop the price of the console.

I think the biggest issue for the PS3 at the moment is that
it hasn't got enough killer games to sustain a marketing
campaign. I think before Christmas they will do the first
round of price cuts followed by more next Feb/March.

They've done a price cut in america already and they're
bringing out a 160gig version soon too. I don't know about
Europe. All the games companies like to fuck Europe in the
arse.

No price cut as such, but they bundled an extra controller
and two games (I think it was that dirt racing one and
resistance: fall of man).

The Wii isn't really competing for the same market. First of
all, it targets people who don't want consoles (it's more of
a "gadget" really), and secondly, people who do want
consoles can't satisfy themselves with it (the games are
repetitive and over-simplified), so they get one of the
other two in addition.

The current US price cut only covers depletion of the 60GB
stock. The new 80GB version will retail at the launch
price.

The European inclusion of the additional controller is a
cheap way to delay a price cut.

The Wii is a toy that's fun in small doses. I don't think
the Wii has a major effect on peoples choices between the
other two as it is considered a cheap addition if you want
one.

I don't care wich one is selling the most. I got a 360 and
pretty happy with the games and arcade on the live.
I want to get a wii when resident evil Umbrella Chronicles
is out.
ps3 can suck my balls

you clearly haven't the faintest idea of what you're on
about and are set on trashing the wii because you don't like
it.

There are a number of immensely good games on this console
with many to follow.

Is the wii a gadget because it lacks in the graphics
department?

Is an xbox a console while it is actually just a very
powerful pc stuffed in an odd sized box?

If you had ever bothered playing on a wii (without obviously
being negatively biased beforehand) you might also find that
the controls are indeed nothing short of fantastic and not
just some lazy novelty as i'm sure you think it is.

On a side note, it's quite hilarious how you are upset,
hopeful, optimistic etc regarding microsofts and sony's
progress in what according to you must be the most exciting
arms race currently going on.

If you get a wii, you'll be able to do like I have and play
the gc games on the wii and retire your GC to upstairs:
Being able to play Resi 4 in 2 rooms is awesome. I am
leaning towards a 360 for the new GTA, but I'd like a HD TV
to get the most out of it (having played a 360 at la maison
giginger, I realised that there has been a leap in graphics
since the last generation, you just need a beast of a telly
to see it).

As much as I like the Wii (it's the only one I have of the
next gen consoles), I do find I miss proper driving,
fighting and mercilessly executing bad guy type games. No
way would I buy a PS3 for a loooong time the way they are
priced at the moment (and no games I really fancy on it that
you can't get on xbox anyway). I'd say depending on how much
cash you have to spend and how much gaming is light hearted
fun vs. dedicated "gaming" I'd go for a Wii or 360. Don't
let the people who describe the wii as a novelty put you
off, mind. Yes, the inital "wow" factor of the controller
does fade, but there are still good games on there.

I just wish Manhunt 2 for Wii hadn't been canned, even the
version I was going to get was pulled and the game hasn't
been sold anywhere in the world. Aside from Resi 4 (Wii
version is great BTW- I don't think I saw the GC version at
your house), it was the only proper "adult" game for the
Wii.

One other thing to consider if you're into retro gaming is
Wii's virtual console vs xbox's arcade. The latter is good
from what I've seen, but the Wii's virtual console has some
absolute belters and eventually it will have Goldeneye too.
