The demo for the latest installment in the Medal of Honor series has been released today. By this point in time I think every gamer who enjoys first person shooters has probably heard of this franchise, but many, myself included, have wondered how much new ground is left to tread in the World War II theater. Hopefully the demo will answer that question, at least partly.
In this game, you'll be parachuting into every mission, and can redrop as many times as you like. You can fall into a different spot on the map every single time, if you're so inclined. From what I can tell the graphics look pretty nifty, but no word on the optimization of the engine, yet. I'm hoping the demo will give an encouraging glimpse of the full version, as it's been released so late into the game that aside from a few minor patches, the retail version won't be much different. The game hits stores September 9th.

Oh, and that pic isn't a screenshot, it's an artist's rendering. I just posted it because it looks sweet. :)

So far, I love the parachute deployment aspect of the game, it's so cool tackling the same level from multiple starting locations. Also, finally there's a WWII game where you can run along the rooftops like a ninja with a submachine gun. There's an RPG-esque experience system for the weapons, where each weapon has 3 upgrades that are unlocked incrementally as you progress through the game. You can also select your gear before the mission begins, which although I believe probably isn't too realistic, is still a nice feature. The game doesn't run incredibly well, considering the graphics really aren't all that impressive. There are some nice lighting and textures, and the animations are really good, but there's no antialiasing and a lot of the models are somewhat blocky and not particularly "next-gen" looking. Hopefully the game will be better optimized with the release of the first patch, but the retail version 1.0 will most likely run exactly as the demo does now. I'll still probably buy this game, but unlike Bioshock, I might wait until I've read some reviews.

Allied assault was a great game when it first came out, and still withstands the test of time fairly well. I'll never forget the first time I stormed Omaha Beach in that game... ah, memories. :D

Update: As of Sept. 4th, Airborne has been available in the US. I've ordered it online and am currently downloading it on EA's Link software. Have less than 1 gig remaining on the file, and then I'll be saving the world from the nazi's yet again. I'll be sure to let you guys know how the full version is tomorrow.

I've been playing the game on the hardest difficulty, and it is pretty ridiculously hard. The enemies all blind-fire with extreme accuracy, and the damage you take is so unforgiving that generally, if someone is shooting at you with an smg, and you aren't in cover, you are dead. Like I said, this is at the hardest difficulty, but the game won't let you change difficulties once you've begun a campaign, so I'm trying to stick it out at this level. I don't recommend playing it at hard unless you're fairly sadistic, as it's really not very fun getting killed by people who aren't even looking at you (blind-firing), over and over again. Had to take a break from the game as I was getting too frustrated. The graphics and sound are excellent, if anyone was wondering.

This is the first Medal of Honor game in a long time that I'm thinking of buying, the demo was cool. Just as an appetizer for Call of Duty 4 though.
EA is doing quite well lately. This is good and NHL 08 is amazing.

The last level of the game, on hard difficulty, is one of the most ridiculous levels I've ever had the misfortune of playing. The respawn rate is incredibly high, to the point that the moment you leave a cleared out room, there's a 50/50 chance that 3-5 dudes are going to spawn right behind you. It's happened twice so far while I was literally looking back at the room I had just left. I understand the point of respawns to keep the tension high, but it's just poor taste and design to allow enemies to respawn while the player is looking at the spot they are spawning on. The worst part is when the uber-nazis with body armor and mg-42s respawn. It wasn't so bad when there was just one per level and they had a boss-feel to them, but in the last mission there are 5-6 of them, and they occaisonally respawn. It ruins immersion and makes the level a chore, if not bloody impossible.
I've dropped (no exaggeration) at least 35 times in this level, and 2 of the 5 skill drops are not accessible due to the level design. I've tried to get to them with just about every combination of moves, and to clear the structures that block the skill drop, you have to move yourself out of range of being able to get back to it. The bottom-line is don't play the game on hard difficulty unless you want to cheat on the last mission. Oh, and since something with vista won't let me bring up the console, my only option for cheating is a trainer.

So after playing this game all the way through, I've found that it basically just sucks balls. This spot-on (and very funny) review of the game sums up precisely the flaws I find in this game. Have a look if you've played this game and want to laugh.

good, i don't have to play it now :)
i kinda feel that the MoH franchise has missed the boat by now, there are so many better shooters out there: Crysis, Bioshock, CoD 4, Orange Box... Granted, strictly speaking only CoD is in the war game niche, so MoH might have a future as a very specialized form of WWII fetish. Still, its ancient roots in the original Playstation are beginning to show.

If you enjoy WWII shooters, it would be best to wait for Hell's Highway to come out early next year, as that looks to be an evolutionary step in both graphics and gameplay for WWII FPS's. MOH: Airborne is a half-baked effort, at best. The multiplayer sucks unless you play on the Axis side because the Allies (read: USA, since Britain is nowhere to be found) drop from the air and the axis spawn on the ground, and are free to shoot at the allies as they helplessly float to the ground.
