I'm listening to Jeff Mills now, and it's kinda "old", I
mean ; it's like he has understood that techno is old now,
but he is still producing techno, but he does it in a good
way... he was inovative in the 90's, and now he is "just"
legend.. old legend.. making good old music..

I meant ; he is doing techno in "an old way" .. he is not
inovative anymore..

Techno was great in '93.

Maybe he is just innovating by not innovating for the sake
of innovation.

Purpousemaker is classic and a record I can sit down and
listen to again and again. I think it sounds like some kind
of deconstructed jazz. I have a few albums after
that..."lifelike", not bad not bad, "At first sight" I find
less interesting.. What do you listen to?

Early mills = classics in every sense.

New stuff = generally quite tired and boring.

agreed.

the old mills produced some ace tracks. the new mills is
either repeating himself, or overly pretentious.

I ask a couple of people to clarify "what the fuck they're
talking about" and it's my problem apparently. Victim
culture, Uncle Sam, victim culture. Get over it and fucking
try to speak clearly.

that's my point, he repeats himself becourse he knows that
techno is old ... he makes old music on ..he is not trying
to be new

what do you mean techno is getting old? jeff is getting more
futuristic with every release and leaves all this idm
dulness that's been coming out in the past couple of years
far behind.

i like steve stoll as well, though i only have to
releases..but he used to be my favourite techno producer
together with mills.

offline morphuze from Denmark on 2007-08-23 12:36 [#02113449]

argh I dont know how to reply.. i have a huge respect to
you, tolstoyed .. I meant that he (Mills) makes techno that
seems old, because it sounds old (duh!) but he does it in a
way that makes him sound like he know what he is doing ...
argh I dont know how to explain it :(

well, he definitely has his own sound. it's not like he's
repeating himself any more than, say, boc does.

i have a new found appreciation for "dull" or "old" sounding
techno, acid - repetetive stuff. i dont think it sounds old
or dull at all but there is something else essential about
it, especially if it is done well - there is like this
classic goodness to it that "modern" idm or whatever doesnt
have. Thats not to say that i dont like the modern stuff.

Amen! I especially like his contribution to the legendary
"Point of Departure" quintet led by Andrew Hill.
