I didn't start playing videogames until after the N64 had
died. I'm catching up on classic SNES, Megadrive and N64
titles on the Wii, and I really think nothing has really
matched those titles since. I mean, obviously I can see that
sound and graphics have moved on, but I've had more fun on
those older games (and remember, this isn't fuelled by
nostalgia since I missed them at the time of their births)
than any new blood.

I like the virtual console, but i still think all titles are
way too expensive.

I had almost downloaded waverace64 after i read the reviews
on IGN, but then i found someone who had the original
cartridge. I hooked the n64 back up only to find that
waverace looks immensely outdated, isn't all that fun and
has NO lasting appeal to me.

Hydro Thunder is far better so i'm playing that again (on
n64).

I have got Bomberman, which is damn hardy hard but rather
lovely, and I've also been playing that Kirby game, which is
also abstract and rather lovely but a little confusing.

stilaktive, I'll agree that those old bleep sounds and music
are indeed wonderous, but the atmospheric stompings of
Silent Hill and others still impress me even more.

You should grab the SMB's 1 2 and 3 and mega man 1 2 and 3
(the rest blows i find). I've also played Balloon Fight in 2
player mode, which is in my opinion one of the best
multiplayer games ever.

Very different for me, even as someone who grew up with this
stuff and has great memories making it hard to be objective
sometimes. But to be honest, when I go back and play games I
used to love, I'm usually underwhelmed now. One recent
example for me- where once Ocarina of Time seemed to be a
sprawling adventure in an exotic land, now it feels to me
like a stroll across some tiny wasteland, too primitive and
devoid subtle details to feel exotic. There's few areas of
interest and the various subsections of the overworld are
laid out in a really contrived way around their featureless
hub. It's typical of the effect better technology and its
effect on game design and immersion has had on me, I just
expect worlds to ''feel'' better now. The dungeons still
hold up though.

Similarly, few 2D games have retained all of their power for
me. Too limited artistically (except in special cases) and I
usually don't find the basic gameplay mechanics very
challenging or involving anymore. Still, the really great
ones transcend their era, like Super Metroid, which I hear
is on the Virtual Console now and I plan on playing it this
week. Have you played that?

I still play older games all the time but for me it's
usually the nostalgia motivating me, unless it's a hidden
gem I missed out on. Too many good memories associated with
them. Certainly many of them are still fun and all of them
are still interesting (which is why I love that the VC
exists, gaming is a young medium is a great history) but I
definitely prefer modern gaming. Looking through an early
90s EGM really shows how far its come. People forget that
95% of 2D platformers back then were not creative games, but
soulless cash-in crap that will never get a spot on the VC.
It's not as bad today.

i'm playing super metroid for the first time on the vc, and
as such i can objectively say that it hasn't aged at
all.
the 2d graphics are better than a lot of 2d i see
nowadays, and the gameplay has the most depth i've ever come
across in a game from its era. this game will live forever
while 3d games have limited appeal only. even the most
recent, awe-inspiring 3d games will look like uncanny valley
puppety crap in a few years (to me they already do, which is
why i don't care about the 360 or ps3).

exploring the vast world of super metroid really makes me
feel like a kid again, exploring strange new places for the
first time. five thumbs up.

so far the other three games i have on the vc that i feel
hold up really well are shinobi 3, super mario world and the
legend of zelda: a link to the past. i'm going to pick up
landstalker once i beat super metroid but i'm scurred that
it won't hold up well. landstalker was probably my favourite
genesis game when i was a kid, after the first sonic.

You gotsta play Actraiser on the VC. It was one of the first
games produced for the SNES and the graphics and music
remain luscious to this day. It's a 2-D sidescroller for
probably 60% of the game, and the other 40% can best be
described as Sim City, but instead of you as mayor, you are
God.

And if you haven't played Castlevania IV, do so if for no
other reason than the gorgeous tunes in every single level
– simply amazing.

virtual console was one of the main reasons why to buy a wii
console. 2D Games are so fuckin awesome, i grew up with lot
of them. I hope they will complete the Megaman series
there.

Also great: Neo Geo games are heading to virtual console (at
least in Japan, but US and EU will follow) for 900 points
for each game. Look how expensive the games originally were
and still are on ebay these days.

What am i missing though is to take your Virtual console
games to your DS system and play on the dentists waiting
room or during your poo sessions. Bring that BigN!

they better up the ante on the virtual console (the
selection of games is very small) on Wii or else im
probably just going to get my xbox360 modern and just dump a
bunch of downloaded emulators and roms on that.

CV4 is like my favorite game soundtrack ever. It's so damn
avant-garde. I wish they'd ditch the animu style and
cakewalk gameplay of the modern Castlevanias and make the
games dark and hardcore again. The new Rondo of Blood remake
for PSP looks like a step in the right direction. But
Igarashi is such a fag.

It's also ridiculous that there hasn't been a great 3D
Castlevania yet, the potential is there. In the right hands,
it could be brilliant and beautiful. Igarashi is a hack.

much fun!

castlevania IV does have one of the best scores of all time
it also sounds surprisingly high quality for being on the
snes.

I reckon the team who did God of War could do a good job of
it. Belmont's whip isn't so disimilair to Kratos' swords...

since i own most of the snes classics, i think ill stock up
on some of the n64 titles i havent played in years. there
are a few snes games i regret selling way back when, like
kirby all stars. is that on the VC? I still haven't figured
out how it all works. Do I just plug my internet cord into
the Wii and buy those Wii Point card things? Or do I have to
get some kind of special Wii internet thingy.

Wii is wirelessly enabled. I think you actually need to buy
some extra bit of hardware to physically wire it in. If it's
the same in America as it is in the UK, you should just be
able to buy points to get for games using your credit card.
