Thats not music.

I get annoyed when I hear this from people when I try to
let them listen to something, the other day I was letting
someone listen to boards of canada, and they said, "Thats
not music!" not that boc is so abstract and on the fringes,
but i would feel the same had I been playing merzbow or
something. It really gets me irked, I am still thinking
about it now as I right this. I am all for opinions and all,
but this one blows my mind - to stamp something as not
music? isnt that kind of kind of the point of art? to push
boundaries and all.

what are y'alls thoughts.

real music is any song that's three minutes long or less,
has vocals and you can either dance or cry to it. everything
else need not apply.

It 'bugs' you because the only way you can stick out is by
listening to semi marginal music. Your friends appreciate
music at face value.

not everything your therapist tells you applies to everyone
else.

but i'm sure there is a very good reason why mrgypsum craves
the approval of his friends.

though.

visit them. My withering looks have no effect.

i wouldn't really care
how's it different from you thinking the same of merzbow, if
they don't perceive it as music they don't

by saying 'it's not music' they could mean 'it's noise',
they could also mean that it's not their taste, because for
instance they like only stuff with beats. but i think both
reasons are valid

why do nerds want to be part of the cool gang so much when
all the cool gang does is spit on them, throw rocks at them,
and kick dirt in their face? gosh i wanna be just like
them so i can feel better about my own insecurities of not
fitting in by taking it out on people weaker than me.
i
have never wanted to associate myself with people who
disrespect me. i'd rather stick my boot up there asses.
which if i did i'd have to stick my boot up everyones ass
and i don't got the time or enough boots. so i stick to
myself. i work the graveyard shift alone and i take all my
college courses online so i don't have to put up with anyone
else's bullshit. FTW!

ah yeah, the simple people, the ones so sure about their own
lives and their own taste in music. I even had this one
classmate that kept repeating "Hello Meow" at me when i let
him hear that track once, now that's annoying.

That's why its called 'intelligent dance music'. Only we are
intelligent enough to get it.

frustrating. you need to find some new friends, or stop
playing boards of canada to complete strangers who are
clearly not the kind of people you want to be around. if
it's not their taste, that's fine, but saying it's not music
is arrogant, stupid and a waste of your valuable time as a
human being who will inevitably die.

more wanted your thoughts on the subject not a lesson on
sticking up for myself or finding new friends

Just as some people think that somehow "art" is a label of
quality, those guys must think that music has to be good to
qualify as music. They just think that you're uncool and
have bad taste, and who can blame them.

i would think that i am cool by listening to music on the
cusp with the 'new sound' thus my friends would give me the
attention i so crave. its really sad, my hopes were dashed
to bits, guys weres my soft shoulder to cry on? can i find
no one here, HERE, that can substitute that attention?

If you casually expose people to new things, ex: play BOC in
the car beneath a conversation, they're more likely to be
receptive. What struck me by your post was that you
mentioned twice that you "let" them listen to BOC. It's
just music. I'm sure it hurts that your friends can't share
in something you feel so strongly about, but you probably
think some of their music choices are crap too. What do
they like? Maybe you can start off with something in the
middle and slowly bring them to your side of things. Just
be casual like it's not a big deal.

i like a lot of music, so we usually try to swap artists we
never heard before

its not that they didnt like it that bothers me, its that
they say its not music, thats what bothers me - i would have
liked better if they said, this sucks!
