Does anyone here like metal?
I personally love metal every bit as much as electronic music. I listen to mainly melodic death metal, though I do like some other types as well.
Here's some of my favorite bands in metal:
The Black Dahlia Murder The Faceless At the Gates In Flames (not much after The Jester Race) Mors Principium Est Between the Buried and Me Protest the Hero Through the Eyes of the Dead Eternal Lord King Crimson (though they aren't really simply metal, they're still one of the best and most influential bands in the genre)
Slayer (new stuff is terrible, Reign in Blood is the shit)

In my opinion though, their older stuff is much more musically advanced than their new stuff.
Songs like South of Heaven, Raining Blood, Seasons in the Abyss, Dead Skin Mask, etc. are much more melodic and simply outshine any of their newer stuff. I think what happened is that they just tried to become more mainstream metal or something as the years went on, I don't know. :/

I really like the Gorguts/Cynic/Atheist/Necrophagist school of metal- technical, but really concise and to the point. Bowel gurgling vocals optional.
But early black metal is the coolest, that first Bathory album sounds too legit, Necromansy is the baddest shit. Oh God. Oh GOD.

You'd probably like The Faceless Ophecks, they're really new and strangely from California, but they're extremely good. It's like a mix of tech-metal, melodeath, grindcore, and plain old death metal.
I don't think they're quite up to Necrophagist's calibur in terms of pure skill level, but they're damn close. And for their debut album (Akeldama), it's simply amazing. They're also one of the few tech-metal bands that I know of that can really pull it off live.

Meshuggah (Chaosphere, Destroy Erase Improve and Nothing) Voivod (Only Phobos and maybe Negatron) Kobong (Chmury nie bylo - still blows my mind after 10 years)
Antigama (everything, but the best one is Zeroland) Nyia Yattering (Genocide is their best, but Murder's Concept is also engrossing in its no holds barred approach)
Behemoth (Demigod is as good as they say)

King Crimson? Are you talking about the same King Crimson who are the prog rock band from the late 60s and the 70s, the band with Robert Fripp?

Yeah the DVD that comes with Nothing has some live footage as well as videos... The music is still great though. And with a bigger budget, maybe their videos wouldn't suck that much. But in the end, who cares.

Yes Marlowe, that's the same King Crimson you're thinking of. =P
King Crimson could be classified as a lot of different things, not just metal, but their sound influenced a huge amount of metal bands.
Their stuff on "The Power to Believe" could probably be considered progressive metal I suppose. It's still good either way, so you should check them out. =P

Been listening to a lot of metal recently. These are my current favorites.
Carcass - Necroticism (all time classic - Heartwork is also
good)
3 Inches of Blood - Fire Up the Blades (Fucking Awesome wailing vocals)
Pig Destroyer - Phantom Limb
Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain
Mercyful Fate - Don't Break the Oath (Probably in the top 3 or
4 metal records of all time - no shit.)
Nachtmystium - Instinct:Decay
Xasthur - Subliminal Genocide

as i associate "metal" with bands like Metallica - i can't agree. KC music can sound hard, or really HARD, but it's not metal.

Yeah I can't really consider King Crimson metal either, but they certainly did influence it heavily. Most comparably heavy bands of their era were very blues-based, but they broke away from that in the early 70s. I hear a lot of KC in the more operatic, progressive flavors of metal. It's almost spooky.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't put King Crimson in same category of bands like Carcass, Cattle Decapitation, Necrophagist, Slayer, etc.
However, there are a lot of metal bands that were heavily influenced by King Crimson's style. King Crimson is known for their use of different time signatures, tempo changes, and minor chords that you find in a great deal of metal bands today.
I must say though, that if Dream Theater can be considered metal, certainly King Crimson can be considered so, as there are many different flavors of metal (progressive, death, power, melodic, symphonic, thrash, speed, etc.). They definitely aren't confined to one genre though.
Listen to some songs like "Level Five" and "Elektrik" and you'll see the metal shining through. =P
