A friend of mine stayed in the Korean district of NYC at a fairly good hotel for 100 a night. I have always wanted to stay at the Chelsea

The only way you'll find a place for less than $100/night is to stay in a hostel. Now, while it is *possible* to find a somewhat decent hostel to stay in, they are few and far between. But if you don't mind sacrificing a few luxories (i.e. private bathroom, room service-including turndown service, a courteous staff, etc) then most of the hostels listed on newyork.citysearch.com are pretty cheap and have decent reviews.
The other things I would suggest if you really want to spend less is to consider staying in one of the outer boroughs like Queens or Brooklyn. Areas like Williamsburg and Prosepct Hieghts in Brooklyn and Astoria in Queens are pretty up and coming areas and might have less expensive accomidations--but again, be aware than you get what you pay (or don't pay) for *especially* in New York.

Cheers for replies, I think we're doing a hostel, but not shared rooms. Seems a good compromise and its about $55 a night. I don't care about shared bathrooms etc its only a few days.
Looking forward to this... anyone got any top tips for NY? Clubs, shops... whatever.

I've never really liked the idea of New York, but I do like most big cities. London is great.

i stayed at the Whitehouse (hostel) in lower Manhattan... it was reasonably priced, and not super offensive otherwise... i believe most of the rooms are private, and while the rooms don't have ceiling (ie: it's kind of cubicle stylez) i didn't mind it too much, and it didn't seem to be a safety or security issue...
plus it's reasonably close to a lot of stuff worth seeing, and the area itself is nice.
