It makes me want to create good documentaries that don't try
to distort reality to make it fit into a neat little boring
narrative. That's about how life-changing it is.

"the road to hell is paved with good intentions"

these kids are far too young to be exposed to religious
ideas, at least wait until they're older before filling
their heads with that stuff. it is possible to raise
children to have faith with a more subtle and graceful
approach - yea that may take time, love and effort - unlike
the lazy attempt shown here

dariusgriffin:> i dunno about all that, it kinda speaks for
itself really...and i can't hear any narration.

no wait, you're referring to all the positive things that
this doco left out? how would you have gone about making
this doco differently? not having a go at ya, just curious.
im sure what ive written above doesn't apply to all
religious families, regardless of being christian or not

that was a nice point

though maybe the parents feel inadequate and think you can
never have too much jesus

There's a segment in this where you see how the kids are
home-schooled, and you also get to see what they watch on
tv. All religious things. They're never exposed to anything
else at all. This gives the children a sense of knowing
there is a god instead of believing there is a god, which
kind of is the least Christian thing you can do.

What got to me was that saccharine sweetness of
character...it speaks through the children a number of times
during that trailer; i certainly wasn't cringeing, but it
was something equally as unpleasant

Yep. Ironically, I think this makes their faith weaker in
the long run as when they are exposed to outside influences
in later life (which, unless they live like the Amish for
the rest of their lives) it will all come crumbling down.
Look how many poor amish kids get fucked up when they spend
their two years out in the "real world".

I believe the Amish are a bad example. I think they do spend
a year or so in "the real world", but most of them find the
dishonesty and general crappyness of the real world enough
to make them want to return to the Amish communities.

I was talking more about the ones who elect to stay in the
outside world, a lot of them wind up as drug addicts. It's
comparatively few who choose to stay in the outside world,
but live as 'normal' well adjusted members of society.

Arguably, a great many of them who return to their
communities precisely because as you say, the outside world
shakes them so much, rather than a religious one (I
recognise this is hard to quantify- few would admit this for
fear of being outcast).

Although it's to a lesser extent, I have some old friends
who I don't see any more because they only associate with
groups of other Christians (I'm a Christian, but most of my
friends are not). They go to church, they work in Christian
jobs, they only see and interact with other Christians, they
date and marry other Christians, they aren't really
interested in seeing any none-Christian friends unless
there's a chance of converting them etc. I think that's a
weaker sort of faith than what I have.

Hey to each his own. If the parents of these little twerps
want to believe that taking their child here would turn them
into good Christian me & women...hey you might be right, but
there are gonna be a few that would reject it all together.
Let developed minds make a decision.

It's not a question of bias or anything, and I think the
people running the camp are fucks. It's just, I don't know,
it seems like the material was simplified in order to create
an easy to follow narrative, with interesting characters
emerging and going on adventures of some kind, etc. I have
noticed this a lot in recent American documentaries. And
it's a shame, because the subject here was great, it could
have been fantastic.

I have nothing about distorting reality, it's great, but it
should produce something new and original and fun, not just
some dumbed-down approximation of life as seen through a
haze of conventional narrativity.

I'm writing unreadable garbage because I want to.

the most important things we can teach our children are to
be honest, both to themselves and to others, and to question
everything.

if any of you have actually seen this movie, its a fucking
horror show.

scariest thing id seen in ages, these people are the true
definition of evil - intolerance, zealotry, and ignorance
seem to the be three pillars of the evangelist faith.
