I've been playing around with various dj programs, and I'm feeling that the programs are quite limited. For now I'm most fond of Traktor, but it doesnt have VST support or an ability to prepare files, with cue points or loops, which would be so lovely. Any ideas?

it used to have it. all of it. right from its first version, if you are using 3rd one. yeah it sucks because of this but theres 4 decks and cool phaser and reverb effect. i don't mix a lot. not really into it any more, it doesn't matter to me. you can put 20 secs fade time in winamp if you play structured music like techno or drum & bass its a mix up too pretty much... good luck.
ps: if you ever need to perform live, use a brainspawn program called "Forte" its designed specifically for that purpose, you can use up to like twenty vsti's at once. it is the best of it kind, possible even one and only.

I've tried Live, but I feel you loose the side of DJing when you need to split everything to separate samples and all that jazz. Are there any good examples of how to use Live as a DJ tool?

um ableton is insanely beyond tracktor for djing.
the main problem is you have to very meticulously make sure your tracks are beatmatched properly. even though the built in beatmatching is quite good, its far from perfect. once you get that down, youre going to be doing things light years beyond what tracktor can do.

I posted this in the Tuss@33 thread. you guys might find it interesting.. pretty limited but fun.
Have you guys not heard of THIS great piece of software? Its totally free and very small (only 152k).
Direct Link to mr1200 file
Anyway.. It is basically a software turntable.. plays .mp3 at variable speeds of up to +/- 8% or 20% of original speed of the recorded .mp3. so yeah.. rip your mp3 and slow it down
or speed it up via this fun little program..
I found a link to it a few years back. seems not too many people have tried it?
Hope you enjoy!

you don't have to "split everything into samples," on Albeton as much as "easily set time envelopes." I've never tried Traktor, but Ableton seems pretty decent if you're just about software DJing... the tutorial there has a little section where it shows you how to crossfade and a few other simple tricks. I'd recommend doing all the tutorials Ableton has actually.

I've been playing around with Ableton Live as a DJ tool today, and starting to get the hang of it. The only thigs is mixing up different tempo tracks, as all the clips you have obey the main tempo so if you have one that is 60bpm and one is 100bpm it kinda tricky, but it would be tricky with anything tho. Lovely. Anyone have good tips for vsts or something else for ableton for djing?
