Has anybody downloaded 'genuine advantage' in an xp update
and does it suck enough to avoid forever? I can't get any
more windows updates unless I get that and it's preventing
me from downloading media player and stuff until I get it.

microsoft spyware?

linux parody of it

you can stop it from installing the wga update. when it says
updates are available, goto the advanced option or whatever
it is called, then i think you untick wga and it will say
"this will never be installed" and you click ok. That was a
rough guide, but you get the idea.
If you already have it installed, you can get rid of it, I
assume you know how to use a search engine...

I installed it. It's not as evil as people make it out to
be. It only sends your ip address to MS and makes sure you
have a legal version of xp. So if you do, I wouldn't worry
about it.

Trust me, you /need/ to get all the windows updates as soon
as they come out. The security issues that are regularly
patched are downright frightening. Lots of security
problems that can give hackers total control of your
computer if exploited.

Of course, if it's true that you can opt out and still get
updates, do it.

I just tried windows update again and it kind of tricked me
into downloading genuine advantage tool kit (last time it
had a declinable prompt mentioning what it was). All well,
at least I got all the security updates. Now I'll just avoid
media player so I don't have to validate my copy of windows.
It's not worth the risk that it could fail to recognize it
as genuine or something- which could result in endless nag
prompts or inability to log in or who knows. I just don't
want to reinstall everything.

Deviating slightly from the original topic, my uncle wanted
me to give him a pirate copy of vista because his genuine
oem version wouldn't properly accept his serial number.

If this is the mentality of the average computer user, then
it's no wonder windows is one of the most pirated pieces of
software.

Tell your uncle to complain to whoever he got the OEM from
(because they may have pirated it), and to MS (because WGA
might be fucked up.) To me that's completely unacceptable.

I got the security updates which is what I wanted mostly.
Thanks though. The only thing I'm being blocked from now is
media player but I'll just find something else instead (for
now I just use audacity). That computer has a license
sticker on it and it came with xp already on it but no disc.
So it probably is 'genuine' already; just don't want to
hassle with whatever results in case it isn't.

Actually, reinstalling Windows will do nothing to the non-OS
files that are already on your computer, unless you choose
to do a full reformat.
