Anyone play it?

I've played since I was 9 or 10. I was a 1.6 player for a
long time, but a little less than a year ago or so I
switched to Source. I play competitively a lot with very
good players, but I still know how to have fun. =D

If anyone here plays, 1.6 or Source (preferably Source since
I'm terrible at 1.6 now), let me know and we can play some
time. :)

counterstrike is fun if you're on a good server. I've never
played source and don't really want to.

Check out ukcs.net
those servers are brilliant fun, caused me to carry on
playing that game instead of giving up. the people on there
are great and ive laughed my head off at some of the banter
more times than i can remember.

Yeah, I play CS:S all the time. My steam account name is
jamesdewar, if you want to add me to your friends list.

Once I played a superb game of counterstrike. The other
members of the team all spoke english, no one engaged in any
dickish team killing and people actually worked as a team.
Perhaps most incredibly, when people issued commands or
advise, the other members of the team listened and adhered
to it.

I've never played another game which came close and soon
after stopped playing.

i used to play 1.6 about 60 hours a week when i was
unemployed. it was the hardest addiction i've ever had to
break.

Never really liked counter-strike all that much. No stamina
system means infinite bunny-hopping, and no respawns =
boring. The guns and maps are all reasonably cool, I just
don't see how there are people who spend their entire day
playing this game. For those of you who think evolume is
joking, there are people out there who STILL play 60 hours
per week. My friend Chris is one of them and plays Cal open
tournaments all the time. His job is literally to play
counter-strike. Since he's making a little bit of money off
of it here and there, it's hard to tell him to quit, but to
devote all your time to it? Goddamn that is a life I don't
ever want to lead.

the thing that really made it hard for me to quit was the
competitive nature of it as well as the team play aspect. i
was a total stat whore and so I was always trying to be top
not only on my server but in the world with different
weapons, on particular maps, headshots etc.

then when they added voice communication, it really changed
the game because a really tight team could dominate using
actual strategy and teamwork.

I also really loved the purity of the game. you are
extremely vulnerable, and with no respawns you had to really
use cover and work as a team to protect each other. also,
there are really no power-ups and the weapons are, for the
most part, pretty balanced and more or less accessible to
everyone. So the only way to get more powerful, is just to
become a better player than everyone else which means you
gotta play play play play...skip meals...ignore your real
life... stay unemployed... ahh good times...

I once had to strike the counter in my kitchen because I was
so incensed that my coffee was not only sub-strength, but
also tepid.

I used to be slightly addicted, but ever since Battlefield 2
came out it's been that instead. And I play loads of games,
so I'm never really addicted to just one.

I think online games are great but sometimes I feel lucky
that I personally am not attracted to them. The circle of
non-stop death isn't my thing. I kind of need a narrative or
a world I can interact with at my own pace, I don't like
competitive gaming. I don't even run in games that I really
like, I walk unless I'm attacked. Online co-op is super
though.

Well, I'm 18, but I've been playing CS for a very long time.
I don't play for absurd amounts at a time like a lot of
people do (though I used to), because I found that I get
burned out if I play too much like that.

I really enjoy the competitive community most though. It's
nice to have people that know what they're doing, know how
to execute strategies, and make good calls when you're
playing. I actually may be heading to the Summer CPL
tournament for CS:S with my cousin, though we still need to
get a team together, hah.

As for the Battlefield series, I played it a little bit when
1942 came out, but I'm really pretty terrible at it. The
maps are huge, and I find that I get lost easily, and get
picked off everywhere I go because I don't know where
players are on the map. My dad loves the series though, and
plays BF2142 a lot.

In Battlefield, you have to use the terrain much more
effectively. I can't speak very much about 1942 because I
hardly ever played it, but I absolutely love BF2142, and
almost never get sniped because I use cover and movement to
my advantage.

I do agree that just about any multiplayer game is really
fun when people are working together and using strategy.
Unfortunately, I've only ever played CS:S in pub servers
where it's mainly just Rambo-ers and Trash talkers, most of
which have yet to hit puberty. Being harrassed by someone
who's balls haven't even dropped yet is not my idea of fun.
In the same breadth, I don't know if it's fair to judge the
game itself based on the actions of annoying players in pub
servers, so overall I'd say it's a pretty good game.

Yeah, I see what you're saying.

One game I'm actually really excited for now is Call of Duty
4. If you've seen the trailers for it, not only are the
graphics amazing, but you can actually use tall grass,
trees, etc. for cover. Looks pretty awesome.

And of course, Crysis will be badass.

I do agree about pub servers though, most are filled with
stupid 12 year olds. If I hadn't gotten involved in the
competitive scene for it, I doubt I'd still play it.

Call of duty 4 looks great, and so does crysis, and even
though I have a direct X10 vid card, I dont have vista and
don't plan on getting it for a while, so there goes crysis,
at least for now.

But yeah, I should've probably noted that I think
counter-strike really would be awesome when played
competitively. The only problem for me is that tournament
play isn't very accessable to casual players who still want
to use strategy (unless you want to lose).

I'm a sucker for WWII games, so I really like DoD:S. Do you
play that? The stock servers offer some pretty unrealistic,
arcade style gameplay, but there are servers that run
Realism mods to correct the accuracy, rate of fire, supply
(how much ammo you have), etc. of the game, as well as
putting the reins on bunny hoppying. People usually play
strategically in these servers, so it's basically like CS:S
set in 1940s Europe with respawning.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the teamplay in
Counter-Strike, most people in pub servers opt for the
run-n-gun-get as many kills as I can strategy and don't
listen at all.

I've played DoD:S before, and I actually like the game quite
a bit. I do like DoD 1.4 (I think this is what it's up to
now) a lot more. I never played DoD competitively, but I was
probably good enough to. My cousin, my brother, and their
friends were actually all really good. My cousin started one
of the best DoD teams that is still in existence, and they
all went to CPL for DoD in 2005. I like DoD 1.4 more because
I think it's a lot more balanced than DoD:S, and I like the
old versions better.

Agreed, DoD 1.4 is balanced a bit better, and has the
British "team" and the paratrooper maps.. Ultimately DoD:S
is a modest offering compared to the original DoD, but I'm a
sucker for the Source engine, which has improved even since
DoD:S was originally released, and will improve again with
the release of Episode II. The main reason I play only on
realism servers is because it brings back some of the
balance from DoD 1.4, even if the British are nowhere to be
found :*(

Anyone remember about that guy who died in an internet cafe

Haha! seriously? I don't mean to laugh but... wow, he must
have been on some drugs to keep hunger and sleep at bay for
30+ hours... I understand that the game itself is a drug for
some people, but isn't it natural to assume that after not
having eaten in 30 hours, he'd get hungry enough to take a
break? R.i.P Die-hard CS fan...

There's a LAN center here (Lee's Summit, MO) that my cousin
is sponsored by that actually sells food and drink - most of
it's just candy bars, chips, soda, and energy drinks, but
it's still nice to be able to have a snack and eat. =D

Oh, haha.. internet cafes... I was thinking of lan centers,
as all the lan centers in my area dont allow food or drink
in the cubicles. I should go to bed.

Really, your lan center sells snacks? That's gnarly... The
ones near me are so damn uptight... they're afraid of
people's greasy hands on the mouse, and people spilling
drinks on the computers, I suppose.

giving away headshots is considered cheating

I used to get banned on 1.6 pubs for that all the time,
lol.

I hardly ever pub at all in Source though so I don't have
that problem now. =D
